Sandwich
T hose who cross the Sagamore Bridge and zoom down the mid-Cape highway to their destinations may not realize what they are missing. They pass right by one of the loveliest towns on Cape Cod - Sandwich - located just a few miles east of the bridge on Route 6A.
Sandwich, dating from 1637, was settled before any other town on the Cape. Here's the place to feast your eyes on houses from the late 1600s. The oldest house on Cape Cod may very well be the Hoxie House, a weathered saltbox right on the pond at the center of town.
  • You can spend a relaxed and romantic afternoon strolling around Shawme Pond, developed to create power for milling. Today it is picturesque rather than industrial, with reflections in the water that photographers will appreciate immediately. One perfect shot picks up a reflection of the mill, with a draping willow tree in the foreground. Nice old stone walls are handy for a rest during your stroll, and we noticed people bringing jugs to fill with fresh spring water at a source just across the road from the pond.

One of the first taverns in the area did business on the site for many years - photo 1

One of the first taverns in the area did business on the site for many years; it was known as an Ordinary. In 1692, Roland Cotton and his wife Elizabeth built their home here and it was a parsonage until the 1750s. During the American Revolution the building, then a tavern, was a gathering place for the patriots.
  • Daniel Webster came to hunt and fish and had a room reserved for his visits. He was sometimes annoyed that the glass workers tended to use his best hunting places.
  • Although the building succumbed to a fire in 1971, it was rebuilt in the style of the old and charming tavern. The inn has a conservatory with view of the garden, where romantic couples celebrating a wedding, anniversary or other special event like to have photographs taken. Bedrooms have four-poster canopy beds and fireplaces. Some have whirlpools. Captain Ezra Nye House

Captain Ezra Nye built the Fessenden House across the street in 1826 then - photo 2

Captain Ezra Nye built the Fessenden House across the street in 1826, then, after returning home from a voyage, built this larger home in 1829. The innkeepers have decorated the home with their own personal pieces collected from around the world. The house has lots of nooks for a private chat, or you can borrow a book from the extensive bookshelves.
  • A girl came to the US from Italy to attend college, and through her computer she "met" an Italian man. They decided to get together and settled on the Captain Ezra Nye House as the meeting place. He brought along a dreamcatcher, a Southwest Indian charm, which reputedly makes good dreams come true. She accepted his proposal, and the rest is history.
  • If you'd like a romantic suite with a separate entrance, ask for the Rose Suite, which features a queen-size gold leaf bed, leather arm chair and large pecan bureau. The sitting room is small, but cozy enough for a couple who want to curl up and watch TV.
The largest room, the Blue Room, has a lovely carved mahogany four-poster bed and a working fireplace. It is in a quiet location.
A Japanese screen enhances the dining room, along with a collection of beautiful porcelain. It's just the place to enjoy a gourmet breakfast. The Belfry Inne

This inn is a true "painted lady," with its Victorian underpinnings intact. The lovely Sandwich-glassed double front door tells the tale of more to come. There's an original Eastlake newel post. The common rooms are welcoming, with Queen Anne settees, oriental carpets and built-in china cabinets. Each bedroom is different; some have fireplaces, balconies, skylights or vintage bathtubs. Martha's room with a Wedgewood blue and white decor. The ball-footed soaking tub is a dream after a day of activity. Sara's room has an iron king-sized bed, claw-footed soaking tub, gas fireplace, skylight and antique dressing table. Walk up to the tower for a view.
