ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Our text is a tapestry of many autobiographical acts. If the well-known and unknown women, some of whose voices are included here, had not penned their diaries, this book could not have existed. If friends, relatives, archivists, and presses had not chosen to preserve and disseminate women's diaries, this book could not have existed. If those who value women's personal writing had not given it the recognition it deserves, both inside and outside the academy, this book could not have existed. Finally, if our contributors had not believed in the need for a book that shows the breadth and depth of the seemingly simple act of penning a diary, this book would not have existed. To all these people we owe a debt, for their autobiographical acts have made our lives much richer through showing us the significance of daily living.
