Foreword
If you are a woman, there is a one in eight chance you will develop invasive breast cancer in your lifetime, as breast cancer is the most common cancer in women with nearly a quarter million new cases diagnosed in 2011. Interestingly, 99 percent of breast cancer patients have chemicals called parabens in their breast cancer tissue.
Parabens are problematic as they have estrogen-like properties that are widely known to promote the development of breast cancer. Any time you shampoo your hair or apply deodorant, body lotion, or cosmetics, theres a good chance youre also absorbing your fair share of the estrogen-mimicking, cancer-promoting compounds they likely contain.
Sadly, this is only one of the environmental exposures that may increase your risk of developing breast cancer.
There are many others, from hair dyes and hormonal contraceptives, to synthetic hormones in milk and even the very procedure recommended for breast cancer screeningmammography. Certainly there are breast cancer cases that occur as the result of genetics or manifest even in the absence of a known environmental or other trigger, but for the most part these numbers are dwarfed by the influences for which we have enormous control over.
There is strong support that some of these epigenetic regulators could be the carcinogens in your food, water, air, and workplace. Theyre all around you, yet the warningsand the regulatory actionshave been slim to nonexistent.
As the chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, and professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, there is perhaps no better authority to speak on this urgent issue than Samuel Epstein, MD. Why are we losing the war against cancer when it is very clearly a winnable one? This is the question Dr. Epstein answers in this book that should be on every womans nightstand. As he points out: Being able to cure a disease should be secondary to preventing it in the first place...
The War against Cancer Can be Won
Having authored 270 scientific articles and twenty books on the causes and prevention of cancer, Dr. Epstein is exceptionally qualified to discuss topics related to cancer prevention, and the toxicological causes of cancer that must be part of any effective cancer prevention plan.
We have been engaged in the war against cancer for more than forty years and have not made any progress in preventing deaths from breast cancer. If you carefully examine the practice of the cancer industry, it becomes very obvious that it is a well-oiled machine that is more focused on generating large profits than long-term cures.
Even the American Cancer Society, the US organization perhaps most associated with the war against cancer, has received funding from manufacturers of cancer-causing products, and has in its history opposed regulations for products, like hair dyes, that contain cancer-causing ingredients. They are a part of the problem, not the solution. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is another glaring example of the massive conflict of interest in this area.
Beyond this, the facts about the cancer-causing chemicals and technologies being used widely in the United Stateslike nanoparticles in cosmetics that are becoming known as universal asbestosare being hidden and ignored. You and your family use these products unaware of the risks they pose because you have been kept in the dark about their true toxic effects. Simple warnings on product labels could make all the difference, but for now you have to fend for yourself.
