PREFACE
The life of every episode of The Andy Griffith Showthe quality that has sustained its popularity for nearly 30 years with enthusiastic fans nationwideis in the details. With The Definitive Andy Griffith Show Reference, it is our intention to make these details available in a reference format. This book contains complete summaries for all 249 episodes of the series, as well as for the rarely seen pilot (which aired on The Danny Thomas Show), the first episode of Mayberry R.F.D., and the 1986 television reunion movie Return to Mayberry.
We have compiled this book because we believe that this beloved comedy series deserves to be honored with a detailed episode-by-episode guide.
We present the episodes in order of filming. (This is sometimes at odds with the order of their original air dates: for example, episode 161 was aired before episode 160. Today, in syndication, the episodes are usually broadcast in the order of filming.) Following the title, we note original air date, writer(s), and director. In each case, there follows a thorough summary of the episode. Next come Cast Notes, which briefly lists regular cast members appearing and then deals in more detail with guest stars, providing short biographies and lists of credits where possible.
These notes are followed by Episode Notes, which provides further details on such topics as characters, sets, and music in the episode. Within these notes you will also find some discussion of how certain details, such as place and character names, were apparently inspired by real places and people from Andy Griffiths childhood. Griffith was born and raised in the small town of Mount Airy, North Carolina, and it is widely acknowledged that this town often served as a model for Mayberry.
In addition to the episode summaries, this book contains extensive information on the lives and careers of the people who made The Andy Griffith Show possible. This information may be found following the episode summaries, in sections entitled Regular Cast, Producers and Directors, and Writers. For music lovers, we have also included a biography of Earle Hagen, the man responsible for the music on the show.
The final section, an appendix titled Collecting Memories of Mayberry, discusses series-related material available (or, sometimes, rumored to be available) for sale, such as books, video tapes, and memorabilia.
Our main objective in writing this book was to do justice to a series that has been close to our hearts since we were children. We hope we have accomplished this objective.

INTRODUCTION: ANDY LORE
There are countless ways that Americans (and viewers from other countries, too) show their love for The Andy Griffith Show and the mythical land of Mayberry. Most of us simply enjoy watching the show on a daily basis. Some of us purchase Mayberry memorabilia from catalogs like The Mayberry Collection. Thousands of us belong to The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club, founded by (Presiding Goober) Jim Clark. Jim, with Ken Beck, wrote The Andy Griffith Show Book. They also compiled a Mayberry-related cookbook. T.A.G.S.R.W.C. issues the official newsletter (The Bullet) of The Andy Griffith Show. It is chock-full of information and updates on cast and crew, and on the 800 separate chapters of the club. The club has an impressive list of honorary members, such as the Bellamy Brothers, Clint Black, Roy Clark, Katie Couric, Phil Donahue, Radney Foster, Amy Grant, Lee Greenwood, Emmylou Harris, Alan Jackson, George Jones, the Judds, the Kentucky Headhunters, Lyle Lovett, Barbara and Louise Mandrell, Kathy Mattea, Charly McLain, Reba McIntire, John Prine, MartyStuart, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, and (last, and possibly least) Bob Uecker (just kidding, Bob).
Some fans have created replicas of the squad car used on the series. These ambitious fans include Bill Flynn, Rodney Thomas, David Hollen,Luther Venable (who, with wife Alma, operates Mount Airys Mayberry Motor Inn), and Bob Scheib. Mr. Scheib also built a full-size replica of Wallys Service Station, near his Bradford, Ohio, home. Since 1993, it has served as a site of an annual gathering of Andy fans, who flock in from all over to see it, meet other fans and mingle with such celebrities as George Lindsey, Howard Morris, Betty Lynn and Jean Carson.
Looking for a bite to eat? Try the Snappy Lunch in Mount Airy, North Carolina; the Blue Goose in Starkville, Mississippi; the Mayberry Cafe in Danville, Indiana; Browns Diner in Nashville, Tennessee; or Dicks Hot Dog Stand in Wilson, North Carolina. For dessert, try any one of several Mayberry Ice Cream Restaurants sprinkled throughout North Carolina.
