Aunt Bee First and foremost we salute the actors writers and production - photo 1Aunt Bee First and foremost, we salute the actors, writers, and production crew who worked on The Andy Griffith Show and built the place called Mayberry that has been enjoyed and loved by generationsa place that continues to warm our hearts today. Without the fruits of their talents and efforts, we wouldnt be able to offer pies or any of the other treats that have that very special flavor of Mayberry. Many of those same people have shared recipes for this book and allowed us to use photographs that capture their Mayberry rolesall of which has helped this book be an even more meaningful tribute to Mayberry. Were most grateful for their participation. We also thank everyone across the country who provided us with their favorite recipes. (And we have the stomachs to prove it!) Attribution for each contributor accompanies the recipes, and we extend our heartfelt and stomachfelt gratitude to you all. (And we have the stomachs to prove it!) Attribution for each contributor accompanies the recipes, and we extend our heartfelt and stomachfelt gratitude to you all.

We likewise appreciate the assistance of several friends who helped us round up recipes from other folks. They are Kenneth Junkin, Neal Brower, David Fernandes, Dale Robinson, Nancy Clark, Harriet Patterson, Rebecca Barnes, John Faulkner, Katherine Clark, Albert Culbreath, Jim Ballance, John Lock, Randy Bash, Sherwin Bash, Carolyn Moore, Jon Snyder, Joel Rasmussen, Gary Cannon, Bruce Fisher, Alex Mebane, Janice Starnes, Ren Hood, Burt Phifer, Jan McNees, Peggy Myres, and Roland White. In addition, we thank folks who made contributions beyond the recipes themselves. For assistance with photographs, we thank The Tennessean and Frank Sutherland; David Turner and Mitch Powers at Small World Productions; Dennis Hasty; Jackie Joseph; Arlene Golonka; Bob Wagner; Don Pitts; and Albert Cooper. For invaluable help both with photographs and in rounding up recipes, we give particular recognition to Jim Schwenke and Steve Cox. We have special thanks for producer Aaron Ruben for introducing us to the tremendous work done by the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA), and to Mercedes Lawry at National CASA for providing further information about the organizations efforts.

Our primary expertise with food is eating. As Goober once summed up our sentiments, Three hours is a long time to go without eating. Ken has always cleaned his plate and saved room for dessert when eating the cooking of Grandma Beck, Grandma Rogers, and Hazel (Mama) Beck, and today he shares wife Wendys good desserts with daughter Kylie and son Cole. The clock in Jims stomach first began ticking while eating desserts from the kitchen of Tonya (Gramma) Hamel and Nancy (Mom) Clark. And youd better watch out for his hearty eatin around wife Marys cooking. Even after hes given battered beaters a licking, his stomach keeps on ticking.

Finally, we thank Viacom for entrusting this cookbook with us, and Larry Stone at Thomas Nelson for again believing in Mayberry and this project. Editor Amy Lyles Wilson, recipe editor Laurin Stamm, Charla Honea, Mike Towle, Jennifer B. Green-stein, Bryan Curtis, Kath Hansen, Kirsten Hansen, and many other fine folks at Thomas Nelson all helped this Mayberry dream become a reality. Thank you all for your help. We appreciate it! Ken Beck and Jim Clark Aunt Bee is known far and wide for her cooking of all kinds, but if you were to ask Andy and Opie and Barney and Goober where Aunt Bee really shines, theyd most certainly agree its her desserts. Of course, you might get that answer in part because desserts happen to be their favorite part of the meal.

But either way, Aunt Bees desserts win blue ribbons every time. And so, following the warm response to our original Aunt Bees Mayberry Cookbook (Thomas Nelson, 1991), a complete cookbook of everything from appetizers through desserts, we thought it would be fitting to devote a new cookbook to the sweetness of Mayberry. Once again we have gathered recipes from folks who share both a fondness for Mayberry and a knack for cooking. Within these pages, youll find more than 350 recipes from some of the countrys best cooks and most devoted Mayberry fans. Many of these recipesall of which are different from those in Aunt Bees Mayberry Cookbookhave been family favorites for generations. Weve selected recipes that are representative of the kinds of down-home desserts youd expect to find Aunt Bee making.

But youll also find quite a few that can be mastered by Opie and Goober, and even Ernest T. Bass. And weve blended in recipes that we learned about in neighboring Mt. Pilot and down the road in Raleigh, so youll discover an occasional big city taste that we think youll really enjoy. This cookbook is meant to be a tribute (through recipes) to all of the talented people who helped make Mayberry such an appealing place. For that reason, were especially pleased to be able to include recipes from more than forty of the shows actors, writers, production crew members, and their families.

Theyve submitted some of their personal favorites, as well as ones that they think might be appropriate for their part in Mayberry. Beyond the outstanding recipes, weve also tried to make this cookbook one thatll be as inviting just to sit down and read as it is to use for cooking. Weve included more than a hundred photos (many rarely before seen) and lots of dialogue about food, eating, and cooking, plus trivia and other reading that we hope youll find interesting and fun. Theres even a checklist of episode summaries to help you maintain a balanced diet of
