NOTE This volume reprints 100 plates from the French periodical La decoration artistique, published in Paris in the decade preceding the First World War. Siegfried Bing, a German art dealer based in Paris, opened his new gallery called the Maison de lArt Nouveau (House of New Art) on 22 rue de Provence in 1895. Displaying works of what was then considered modern art by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and others, the gallery worked to popularize the style we now know as Art Nouveau, then the New Art of its day. At the 1900 Paris Worlds Fair, or Exposition Universelle, Bing played a crucial role by displaying complete installations featuring furniture, textiles, and other objects of all kinds created in this new and modern style by his substantial roster of artists and designers. Because of its central role in popularizing this new artistic movement, the name of Bings gallery became the name of the new style it featured, and what we now simply call Art Nouveau quickly spread beyond Paris and France and entered its years of peak influence all over Europe and in parts of the world beyond. Art Nouveau came to influence all areas of popular culture, but nowhere more thoroughly than in the field of graphic art and design.
La decoration artistique (published in Paris by Librairie spciale darchitecture E. Thzard fils, diteur) was only one of many new periodicals which quickly sprung up devoted to spreading the artistic gospel of Art Nouveau, and, despite the wonderful designs and images that filled its pages, it did not survive for long in that highly competitive environment. Today, very few of even the worlds greatest libraries have copies of La decoration artistique in their collections, and the pages reproduced in this volume seldom appear for sale anywhere and when they do are generally removed from issues of the original periodical and offered as single sheets. This dazzling array of images includes headpieces, typographical banners, frames and borders, alphabets, wall and ceiling designs, commercial signage, and other graphic creations bursting with parrots and peacocks, vines and flowers, and much more. This volume, reproducing authentic Art Nouveau material from La decoration artistique, will help fill a major gap for any library or collector of Art Nouveau graphics and illustration. 19041910.
