Staying in Touch

Internet access in Spain is reasonably easy with some cafes, most hotels and even some budget accommodation having (usually) free wireless internet access for guests. Be wary, however, of hotels promising in-room wi-fi as connection speeds can vary considerably from room to room; always make clear that you require a room with a fast connection when making a reservation. Good internet cafes are increasingly difficult to find; most corner locutorios (private call centres) have a few computer terminals out the back. Internet-connected telephone calls (eg Skype) are easily the cheapest way to call home. Otherwise, phone cards are your next best bet ( locutorios have the widest selection). Buying a local prepaid SIM card for your mobile phone will work out much cheaper than racking up (often exorbitant) roaming charges.

Why Go?

Visiting Extremadura is like traversing old Spain, from the countrys finest Roman ruins to medieval cities and villages that have yet to fully enter the 21st century. Mrida, Cceres and Trujillo rank among the countrys best-preserved historical settlements, while extremeo villages have a timeless charm, from the remote valleys of the north to beguiling Zafra on the cusp of Andaluca in the south.

This is a region of big skies and vast swathes of sparsely populated land with isolated farmhouses. Wooded sierras rise along the regions northern, eastern and southern fringes while the raptor-rich Parque Nacional de Monfrage is arguably Extremaduras most dramatic corner.

Best of all, relatively few foreign travellers make it this far. Spaniards, however, know it as a place to sample some of inland Spains finest food, especially roasted meats and the pungent and creamy Torta de Casar cheese.
