Learning something new is never easy. Learning to paint is not either. However, the rewards for hard work and much practice can produce wonderful results, making the learning experience much more enjoyable and worthwhile. This is the first time I have not included reference photos in my book. I have a number of reasons for leaving them out this time. When painting, I find that some students get too dependent on the photo, trying to become a human copy machine. This is very inhibiting. Painting should be freer than that. Also, much of what is in a photo is left out when painting landscapes. I have found in the past, students can get very caught up in the differences between the finished painting and the photo, and become very confused. The photo is just a reference. By eliminating photos, all the focus can go to the painting process. Also, by not devoting precious space to photos, I can offer more valuable step-by-step projects to help you learn. I have written this book with the beginner in mind, keeping the steps simple and the projects unique. Dont be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. Acrylic is so forgiving. If you dont like what you have done, let it dry, and in a few minutes, simply cover it up! Dont allow the Awkward Stage to scare you either, for it is an inevitable and necessary step. The Awkward Stage is the crossroads that will take you in a wonderful direction. Just relax, for there is really no right or wrong in painting. Think of it more as fun and experimentation. I will guide you through it, helping you to produce some beautiful paintings. Allow me to be your personal artistic mentor.
Dedication
This book is dedicated to all of the people who, like me, find art to be an irresistible and insatiable calling. What lucky people we are to have this talent, for I believe we see and feel things differently than most. For anyone else who has ever felt that their art has literally saved them, this one is for you!
