The Second Mile
Mission
The Second Mile challenges young people to achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing opportunities for them to develop positive life skills and self-esteem, as well as providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth.
Perspectives
The Second Mile provides a network of prevention, early intervention, and community-based child development programs and services that are provided free to school-aged children throughout Pennsylvania. The Second Mile's programs range in scope from providing exposure to strategies and skills effective in addressing problems of normal development encountered by children in the mainstream to programs and services for children who have been battered and abused, lack parental encouragement and role modeling, or who lack the skills necessary to cope with the trauma and crises confronting their families. Each program focuses on instilling a sense of personal responsibility and preparation for the future in the youngsters.
History
The Second Mile was founded by Jerry Sandusky, the assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator for Penn State University. Through his leadership and the support of many community members, the organization, which was founded and incorporated in 1977, began program operations in 1982. Initially, program services were provided to 45 children in the State College area. Today, more than 100,000 children participate in eight early intervention, prevention, and community-based programs. Hundreds of teachers, school counselors, human service professionals and families refer children to the programs annually.
Early Intervention Programs
Summer Challenge Camp Program. The goal of the Summer Challenge Camps is to provide an environment in which youngsters 813 years of age can begin to develop a better understanding of themselves and others. The activities focus upon building the self-awareness and confidence of campers and teaching them to work cooperatively with their peers. All campers are identified by school counselors or youth service workers as needing additional support and guidance.
During the camp experience, youngsters are asked to identify areas in which they would like to improve during the ensuing school year. If they make significant progress toward achieving their goals, they earn a return trip to camp.

In an effort to provide a continuous program of support for these young people throughout their adolescence, the SMILE (Second Mile Intensive Learning Experience) Program was developed. Open to campers beyond the age of the regular camp program, SMILE continues to build cooperation, self-esteem, and confidence as participants choose to explore areas, such as career development, leadership, or outdoor education.
