FOREWORD

J ay is addicted to French fries! There, I said it. He likes them allshoestrings, wedges, matchsticks, crinkle-cut, you name it. Hes never met a fry he didnt like. One may ask the relevance to Jays mastery of design. PASSION! This is not something that can be taught; it is part of his DNA. Passion permeates every design concept and fuels his creativity.

When I met Jay in 2002, he was fully immersed in his interior design career, constantly exploring color, materials, and space planning and mastering every aspect of the business. Jays passion was infectious, and watching him dig in and embrace the risks inspired me to reinvent my own life and career, which eventually led to my current post as Director of JayJeffers The Store.

As Jay approaches his twentieth anniversary in design, he maintains the same youthful exuberance and passion that he possessed in year one. With every project, I watch Jay coach, motivate, mediate and guide his clients while he deftly navigates the meaning of home. Pushing his own boundaries and propelling his team past every challenge, Jays vision for each space is at once brilliant and soulful.

Working with the person you love can be a challenge for even the strongest of relationships, but Jay and I are not afraid of a challengeor a marathon shopping day in the French countryside! Even in the stressful moments, taking this incredible journey together inspires us to continue, with no end in sight.

This book is a celebration of Jays success. His enthusiasm and creativity are ever more inspiring, and he is the most patient and loving husband a fella could have. I thank him from the bottom of my heart for trusting me and bringing me along for this incredible ride. Michael Purdy

INTRODUCTION L ooking back on the last twenty years working in interior - photo 8
INTRODUCTION

L ooking back on the last twenty years working in interior design, I realize something: Design saved me. Decorating was not my original path. My degree is in marketing and I thought that the fast-paced world of advertising would offer the perfect combination of creativity and business that I craved.

But I had one requirement for myself: I must love what I do. I could not be that person who lived for the weekend, who was always envious of the careers of others, or who was seeking joy through other channels in life. And advertisingwell, I realized early on in my working days in San Franciscowas not it. I honestly lived in fear that I was never going to find it.

Then one spring, for fun I took a night class in interior design offered through Berkeley. Our final project in this introductory course was to design a room for the city and one for the country. It was the first time in my life I could see myself making a living doing something I loved. My professor, an interior designer herself, told me I had potential. I was hooked.

In the early days, I questioned if I had gone out on my own too quickly. Perhaps I should have worked with one of the great firms in San FranciscoOrlando Diaz, Wiseman Group, or BAMOto really learn the world of design and architecture through the talented eyes of a firms leaders and their roster of important clients.

Instead, I took just about any job that came my way. A new bedsure! Paint colors for your two-bedroom apartmentIm there! I learned a great deal through these small projects. The art of bold design came into play immediately. I taught myself how to create spaces with drama and flair through color, bold patterns, and other techniques that didnt cost a lot of money so that we could focus the budget on timeless furniture pieces and inexpensive antiques to bring some soul into a space.

Over the past two decades my projects have grown to include expansive estates and homes throughout the country. And as budgets and commissions have increased, I have had the good fortune of channeling this idea of bold design through the works of talented artists such as Christophe Come, Stephan Bishop, and Willem Racke.

For most of our clients, these are their dream homes. And in many cases, they never imagined they would have such homes. Their trust in me and my team to transform their dreams into reality is not something we take lightly. Many of the projects you see in this book were years in the making. No detail was overlookedfrom the stone on a bathroom floor to the hardware on dressing room cabinets to the cocktail glasses for a dinner party. We created backdrops in which our clients can live their best lives!

This book is a celebration of bold design and the incredible teams that have worked together to make these homes a reality for our clients. I hope you enjoy perusing each project as much as I enjoyed creating them!

WOW FACTOR

A common challenge when designing for young families: melding different tastesin this case, a husband with a thoroughly modern point of view and a wife who didnt want their home to look like a museum. Luckily, the couple were unified in their love for drama, color, and pattern, all of which we employed to soften the lines of the cutting-edge architecture in their new house, perched on a cliff above San Francisco Bay.

I designed the interiors to be as dynamic as the phenomenal views and as wildly imaginative as the architecture, such as a glass stairwell that slices through the living area and a playroom window that looks into the pool. We lined floors with rustic hardwoods and paneled the kitchen cabinets in bronze, which casts a warm, burnished glow. A master bedroom wall is covered in hair on hide for texture. The husbands study is enveloped in cedar that was charred using the Japanese technique called shou sugi ban.
