Preface
The myth developed sometime in Colorado's past that George Mortimer Pullman conceived the idea for sleeping car berths from the miners' bunks he saw during the years he spent in Gilpin County, Colorado. Actually, he already had three sleepers operating in Illinois when he arrived in Denver in July 1860, after a hard week's journey from St. Joseph, Missouri. (He traveled by stagecoach, a vehicle that was a far cry from the sumptuous conveyances he would provide for his own traveling customers.)
