To the greatest kids in the universe: Lena, Ezra, Anya, Kora, Jonah, Noah, Ryan, Reid, Rhett and Halle. We love you and are grateful for the sense of wonder you bring to our lives.
Science is play.
It is the catalyst for curiosity that innately lives in the heart of a child. It is a safe area for the question WHY?
Asking why starts a wondrous adventure! And whys rarely travel alone. One why leads to another and before you know it you are leading a pack of whys down a path of playful discovery.
Being a scientist is fun. Laboratories are the ultimate playground, whether they are in a formal environment, in your backyard or on your kitchen table. They are where the whys come out to play!
There is no limit on playtime with whys. Whys are fine with playing for a few minutes, a few days or a lifetime.
Everyone can be a scientist. There is no age limit, IQ requirement or formal training required.
Lets investigate!
The kitchen is the ultimate laboratory. Ordinary ingredients are transformed by chemical reactions. These things happen every day in the kitchen, but their magic often goes unnoticed.
Hollys pick: Exploding Baggies () is one of my kids favorite experiments. Living in a household with three boys has given me an appreciation for anything that explodes.
Rachels pick: I think the Creeping Ink () is terrific. Your kids will be mesmerized, as mine were, creating one-of-a kind shirtswith science!
Jamies pick: Bursting Soap Cloud () is my favorite science experiment of all time. I like washing my hands with it after!
Bursting Soap Cloud
PREP TIME: 1 MINUTE
EXPERIMENT DURATION: 2 MINUTES
Supplies Needed
Bar of Ivory soap
Microwave-safe dish
Science Question:
What happens to gases as they are heated?
Charless Law (named after a scientist, Jacques Charles) says gases expand when theyre heated. We can watch Charless Law in action with a bar of Ivory soap in the microwave.
The Experiment
Unwrap the bar of soap and place it on the microwave-safe dish. Microwave the soap for 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely to see what happens. (This wont hurt your microwave, we promise!) Let the soap cool a bit and remove it from the microwave.
The Outcome
When you microwave Ivory soap, it expands as much as six times in size and feels brittle and flaky. Try washing your hands with it.
