Ideally, we all eat three square meals a day, every dayno sweets, no snacks, no buttery delicacies for which we might feel guilty the next day. We all sit down to a quiet meal every evening, where the only gentle distraction is some pleasant conversation among dining companions. When we have guests, we break out the tablecloth and napkin rings, begin with a soup or salad, and move on to an elaborate main course. And everyone is content with one slice of cake for dessert. We dont ply our children with snacks in the car, or after the game, no sir. We eat early in the morning but never late at night. And we never ever eat on the run.
And then we wake up. We remember that variety is the spice of life and that finger foods are just where its at sometimes. We live in the real world, where pigs in blankets are the first appetizers to disappear at any affair for good reason (theyre delicious). Were rushing around from one meeting to another, one sporting event to the next, or from the doctors office to our offices. Sometimes, you just need a snack to get through to the next meal and theres no reason not to enjoy it, even if youre eating it in your car. Other times, dinner itself is handheld so some can eat it at the table, others on the go.
When you think of small bites, do you just think of fancy parties with butler-passed hors doeuvres (and no small children in sight)? If thats what youre after, these recipes can certainly be served on fancy silver trays by white-gloved waitstaff. But if the closest you come to a staff is when your dog cleans up the floor after a spill in the kitchen, youll find yourself quite at home here. Small bites are the party foods that you break out when youre hosting the book club, and the mini quiches you bring to a potluck. Theyre the handheld chicken potpies you know your children can devour in the back of the car on the way from the dentist or ballet class or basketball practice. Theyre also the mini sweets no one can resist, since in a bite or two... theyre gone!
