You know the old saying, you never know what youve got till its gone? Well, I think it was written about going gluten-free. Not that I wasnt food-centric before. But being gluten-free and watching someone else mindlessly tuck in to a Drakes Coffee Cake (oh, the crumbles on top!), bite into a Kit Kat bar (break me off a piece?), or even rush off to work or school with a Quaker Oatmeal to Go square (Brown Sugar Cinnamon is my favorite) brings me to a whole other level of snack envy. Sometimes, I think Ive become a woman obsessed with what used to be. And judging from the standing ovation some of these types of classic recipes have gotten when Ive posted them on my blog, youre not too far behind me. If you prick us, do we not bleed? Do we, the gluten-free, not deserve all those classic snacks?
Its not that I even want to eat Entenmanns donuts every day of my life (just FYIif I did, it would definitely be the miniature, chocolate-frosted ones). But the minute you tell me I cant have them? Well, someones gonna pay. And Ill take that payment in cookies, crackers, and red cherry licorice, thank you. Fork over the snacks, and nobody needs to get hurt.
I have thought long and hard about why so many of us (even most of us!) love a copycat recipe for a packaged snack. I think it comes down to reliving old childhood memories and creating new memories together. And so many of the memories with family and friends that we hold most dear are created around food. Maybe you dunked Nilla Wafers in a glass of milk with your grandmother every day after school in the third grade. You dont have to leave that memory on the shelf. Or perhaps your child comes home from school, sad that everyone else seems to have Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies for lunch and she cant have them. You can give her a homemade version thats even better than the real thing. Give them all the taste of it, made with love from your own kitchen.
I do not promise that these will be the healthiest, most virtuous recipes that you make for your family. I do, however, promise that you will feel like Super Mom (or Dad!) when you are able to bring back Devil Dogs for your gluten-free son. And when you see your better half linger for just a few moments too long in the grocery store in front of the Mallomars, youll feel like the best partner in the world when you serve up a spot-on homemade version the very next day. Plus, I have included recommendations wherever possible for what to use to replace some of the sugars and other ingredients in the recipes in this book with other, sometimes more healthful, ingredients. Whenever you make substitutions in a recipe, the results wont be
