THANK YOU
So many people made the Stop & Drop Diet possible that I hardly know where to begin. Mindy Hermann scoured and searched, analyzed and organized the more than 700 foods in this book. Her deep knowledge and experiencenot to mention patience and professionalismare the heart of this book. Likewise, Andrea Au Levitt shepherded the Stop & Drop Diet from budget to bookstore. She is an editor of many talents (extraordinary attention to detail among them), and I dont know how Id produce a book without her.
Rebecca Simpson Steele is Readers Digest s photo director. She devoted hundreds of hours to planning and executing multiple food and product shootsand produced the almost two dozen video shoots for our incredible online course. Her keen eye, her commitment to excellence, and her ability to handle the talent are all gifts I am thankful for every day. Ali Blumenthal is Reader Digest s photo assistant and helped with many aspects of the project. As an accomplished photographer in her own right, we counted on her to photograph the hundreds of packaged foods in the book. I am grateful for the endless hours Ali spent both in the studio and at her desk! Many thanks also to the team at the Taste of Home photo studio, who helped us capture all the meal, restaurant, and recipe photos, especially Kerri Balliet, Sarah Thompson, Stephanie Marchese, and Ester Robards.
And thanks to Catherine Cassidy for supporting this project in so many ways! Lauren Gelman and Kelsey Kloss are the heart of Readers Digest s health team. As director, Lauren was instrumental in pulling together lessons and scripts for the Stop & Drop Online Course . Kelsey worked on almost every aspect of the product suite, writing, researching, organizing, checking, and rechecking. It was with breathtaking grace and admirable fearlessness that Courtenay Smith jumped into her role masterminding the Stop & Drop Online Course . She is executive editor of Readers Digest by day, but eye of the Stop & Drop hurricane by night. I am abundantly grateful for all she does for our magazine, this product, and my spirit.
Thank you for your candor, your wisdom, your tenacity, and your many many skills. I wouldnt dare do a book or tape a segment without you! Of course, Courtenays laser focus and commitment were possible because of the multitalented team on Readers Digest that picked up the slack: Managing director of content operations and all around editorial wunderkind Kerrie Keegan; executive editor and the heart of so much of Readers Digest , Barbara ODair; and creative director Dean Abatemarco, who never met a design he couldnt fix, a cover he couldnt improve. Senior designer Gloria Tebelman saved the day in more ways than I can count. Her vision for the Stop & Drop Diet book cover, her design of Part Three, her production of the online course graphics... everything is just better thanks to Gloria. Readers Digests book department has a deep well of talent.
Fearless leader Debra Polansky, editorial director Jim Menick, art director George McKeon, managing editor Lorraine Burton, master marketers and salespeople Kim Gray, Veronica Gonzalez, and Nancy Taylor. Harold Clarke, you believed from the very beginning. I thank you and miss you. In consumer marketing, I thank Leslie Doty, Valerie Federice, Karen Berner, Jamele Polk, Jess Wesley, Mary Melian, and the rest of their talented teams. Special thanks also to the small army of copyeditors, proofreaders, fact-checkers, food shoppers, designers, and other helpers without which this book could not have happened: Susan Hindman, Mary Jane DeFroscia, Nancee Adams-Taylor, Shara Beitch, Alyssa Jung, Brooke Wanser, Will Sabbagh, Drew Salvatore, Sierra Rinaldi, Claire Nowak, Elizabeth Tunnicliffe, Wayne Morrison, and John Cassidy. Pauli Cohen, Sabrina Strauss, and the Goodman PR team, youre an authors best friend.
Hugs to my dear friends at The Doctors : Jay McGraw, Travis Stork, Shannon Hunt, Andrea McKinnon, Patricia Ciano, Jeff Hudson, Keegan Heise, and team. And a huge shout-out to my fellow Stop & Drop testers: Nora Healy, Donna Lindskog, Angela Mastrantuono, Carol Maymudes, Diane Rohan, Eileen Supran, Karen Woytach, Joe and Kim Gray, and Randi Zelkin. Adrienne Farr, where would I be without you? Steve, Olivia, and Sophia, what would I do? And of course none of this is possible without the woman with the plan, Bonnie Kintzer. Thank you for being a leader, mentor, and all-around inspiration.
Introduction
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Ive written several diet books over the past few years, each attempting to help readers solve the seemingly intractable problem of weight loss. Each time, at least one person writes to me here at Readers Digest or contacts me on social media to say something to the effect of, If your last diet really worked, why do you need to write another one? My standard answer is this: While I always try to make my diets user-friendly and accessible, not every diet works for everyone.
Some people want to be told exactly what to eat from day to day; others just want a few general principles to follow. Some people are happy to cook every meal; others find that impossibly daunting. Some people have 100 or more pounds to lose; others merely a few. Some people are ready to change their whole lifestyle; others are only willing to make a few small tweaks. Personally, Ive always taken a health-focused approach to weight loss, drilling down into the latest science to attack specific physiological challenges that hurt health and lead to weight gain. In my book Flat Belly Diet! , for instance, I focused on the amazing nutrientmonounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAsthat can target deadly belly fat.
