Introduction
Although fashions in decoration come and go, the desire to create something beautiful for your home never goes out of style. During the first half of the twentieth century, hand-crocheted lace played an important role in fulfilling that desire. Americas thread manufacturers produced a flood of instructional leaflets filled with bedspreads, tablecloths, doilies, edgings and other decorative accessories. Today, fine crochet is popular once again, and these old leaflets have become collectors items. The patterns in this book, collected from such leaflets, reflect some of the finest designs of the period.
All of the items in the book can be made with simple cotton crochet thread. Although the specific threads called for in the directions may be unavailable, other suitable threads can easily be found. Be careful in shopping for threads, however, since some product names used in the past are now being used on completely different threads. If you plan to use colored thread, be sure to buy enough at one time for the entire project, since colors can vary considerably from dye lot to dye lot.
