Acknowledgements
The road to becoming a professional astrologer isnt always an easy one and this book would never have materialised were it not for the help, support and belief of many people.
Perhaps most deserving of my gratitude are my students and clients past and present for it is they who believe in me enough to part with their hard-earned cash and inspire me with their enthusiastic feedback.Thank you all especially to the three clients who generously offered themselves for examination in the case studies.
My gratitude also goes out to all those who have offered me opportunities to progress this far: Jill Keene at Natural Health and Well-being, without whom this book would probably still be just a vague notion languishing in the depths of my subconscious; my publisher Wendy Hobson, for seeing the potential in this work and guiding me accordingly; Alex Hall, Sandra Goodman, Stephen Firth, Kit Sadgrove, Pamela Nancarrow and Avril Quincey
Deep appreciation to all those who encouraged me when the going got tough and refrained from telling me to get a proper job, in particular Michael Korendowych - where are you?
A big thank you to the creative members of the team: Andy Campbell for artistic skills right from the very beginning and Steve Johnson for all his design work over the last few years. Much gratitude also to Ian Ingram for his painstaking efforts with the jacket photograph and for not laughing all those years ago at art college when I wanted to photograph zodiac signs! So glad our paths have crossed again.
Technology has never been my strong point, so thank you to Richard Schofield and David Jessop for bailing me out at the last minute.
Special thanks to my parents for their long-suffering material support and to Tony for love, tenderness and belief, not to mention his illustrations and diligent reading of first proofs with thoughtful suggestions for improvements.
And finally, a huge thank you to Trevor Morris, who played such an instrumental part in shaping me into the astrologer who finally sat down to write this book. The journey was not always a comfortable one, but without you I probably wouldnt be where I am today.
Foreword
This book was born from a combination of factors a love of astrology, a passion for health and a desire for people to achieve their potential and follow their dreams. I have felt an affinity with astrology for as long as I can remember and developed an interest in health and alternative therapies in my teens. Wanting people to be happy and fulfilled came later, when I realised how glorious life can be when we follow our hearts.
I soon realised that astrology can offer us the key to unlocking the heart and directing us towards the path that we always wanted to tread before we got lost and meandered off in some other direction. I also realised that astrology can stand alone in its power as a diagnostic tool, because it can help us to achieve wholeness, which is after all where good health stems from. By understanding our natal astrological chart, we can start to understand who we really are and what we really need. This in turn allows for a more balanced and harmonious state of being.
With these realisations, I decided to create a self-help book through which people could not only begin to understand themselves better but also learn to see how strongly their health is connected to their ability to express themselves and live a fulfilling life.
So, although this book may be described as a book about astrology and health, its actually a book about following your heart and being the person you were always meant to be. Because, quite simply, there is no better way of achieving health and well-being.
Introduction
The world is not in need of a new religion, nor is the world in need of a new philosophy: what the world needs is healing and regeneration!
JOEL S. GOLDSMITH, The Art of Spiritual Healing
For anyone involved in healing, this is an exciting time to be alive. We have never had so many natural therapies to choose from and some of them, such as aromatherapy acupuncture and reflexology are now much more readily available and are recognised by the medical establishment progress indeed.
Perhaps most exciting of all, though, is the new awareness gradually seeping into peoples consciousness that illness is a reflection of something deeper. An attack of ME or a heart in need of attention is no longer always merely dismissed as a failing body completely disconnected from us. We are beginning to recognise that such problems are symptomatic of a lack of fulfilment in some area.
They are a physical reflection that something somewhere in our lives isnt working. We can read about this growing awareness in best-selling metaphysical books by Louise Hay Gill Edwards, Caroline Myss, Debbie Shapiro and others who tell how symptoms are metaphors for faulty thought patterns or negative emotions. The wonderful thing about all this is that were starting to take more responsibility for our lives as we realise that illness isnt something that happens to us; illness is something we create.
However, the vast range of therapies now available have a little catching up to do and this includes astrology. Every therapist needs to be aware that clients with chronic ailments have something else going on something in their lives that theyre not happy about, or an aspect of themselves that theyre not fulfilling. Treating them physically isnt always enough. Whats often needed is change, and as therapists we need to be able to recognise when a person is in need of change and to be able to support and guide him or her through it.
