Tway takes great care to warn about the delicacy of tidepool life. Watch where you step and where you poke, she says. That sea anemone youre playing with may be several centuries old.

To Cricket, who was ever-present with me in the writing of this edition,
to the late Munchkin, who excitedly joined me in some of my first tidepool explorations,
to my close friend, Doris Dickinson, who has been supportive in so many ways,
and to my parents, Dr. Patricia and Gene Tway, who have always been an inspiration to me.
Acknowledgments
I am especially grateful to Dr. Nigella Hillgarth, Executive Director of the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, for taking the time out of her busy schedule to write a very thoughtful foreword to this second edition. I would also like to thank a number of people who generously helped with the second edition of this book: Laura Shauger, a great editor for Wilderness Press with whom I enjoyed working and who was meticulous in her editing skills and tightened up the manuscript very skillfully; Molly Merkle, COO of Keen Communications, parent company of Wilderness Press, who patiently oversaw this project; cartographer Bart Wright of Lohnes+Wright and designer Larry B. Van Dyke, both of whom kindly worked with me to make this a more beautiful and accessible book; and Matt Wagner at Fresh Books for steering me in the right direction for the second edition. I am also grateful to my friends who were most helpful for the second edition, including Dianne Pietila and Doris Dickinson.
I feel I must also acknowledge those who were key in helping me with the first edition. Bill Magdych supported me in various aspects of my early tidepool excursions and helped with some of the photography. Bill Riedel, Annika Sanfilippo, the unfortunately late Mia Tegner, and Bill Newman, all from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Don Wilkie, former Director of the Scripps Aquarium-Museum all reviewed portions of the first edition of the manuscript and offered suggestions that both improved and enhanced the book. Several of them and others accompanied me on some long, isolated, and arduous field trips including my mother who adventurously went tidepooling with me in the wee, dark morning hours when the tides were low and I had to use a flash on my camera to capture what we saw.
Many thanks to all of you.
Foreword
I have been fascinated by tidepooling every since I was a child in Southern Ireland. My deep interest in the ocean was fostered by the exploration of the local coastal habitats and the amazing animals that I discovered there. I would have benefited greatly by having a field guide such as this one at that time. I am delighted that there is a new edition of this guide with many updates and all new maps.
This delightful and unusual guide to the tidepools of Southern California is an explorers guide to the coast. There are good descriptions of tidepool animals and habitats with many colorful illustrations, though it is the detailed information and updated maps that make this book so useful. There are nearly 100 maps and descriptions of tidepools sites. Dr. Tways guide is an invaluable companion to the intertidal zone. The guide includes much information on ecology as well as details on localities and ease of access.
Tidepool habitats are fragile and many are at risk from too much human interference. Treating these fragile areas with respect is critical if we are to save them for future generations, and their conservation is an important message in this book.
Dr. Nigella Hillgarth Executive Director, Birch Aquarium at Scripps University of California, San Diego
