About the Author

Mary Paganelli Votto is a graduate of Vassar College and holds Master Certificates in Cooking and Baking from the New School for Social Research Culinary Arts Program. She is a chef, writer, recipe tester, and editor. She loves to cook and eat!

A foreign service brat, Mary traveled the world throughout her childhood, eating her way through the Middle East, Italy, France, and England. While living in New York City after college, she was an extern with the Food Network and worked as a private chef.

In Tucson since 1999, Mary has spent the majority of her time here working with Tohono Oodham Community Action (TOCA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the reinvigoration of culture and health on the Tohono Oodham Nation. As the chef/writer for TOCA, Mary has been responsible for documenting traditional foodways. Her work with elders and community members resulted in the publication of the book From Iitois Garden: Tohono Oodham Food Traditions, a collaboration with TOCA and Elder Frances Manuel that celebrates the culinary traditions of the Tohono Oodham and the bounty of the Sonoran Desert. She is also the author of the travel guide Insiders Guide to Tucson and a contributor of food and restaurant articles to Tucson Lifestyle magazine.

In addition, Mary works as a recipe tester for Canyon Ranch Resorts, was the food stylist and production assistant for the Tohono Oodham episode of the PBS program Seasoned with Spirit: A Native Chefs Journey, and the food stylist for Primal Grill, season 3. She is also an adjunct professor of culinary arts at Tohono Oodham Community College and the consulting chef for the Desert Rain Cafe.
