T hank you for purchasing this book and I hope that it goes a long way in helping you develop your musical skills in these styles of music.
As playing funk styles is a passion of mine, I have written another instructional book basing the grooves on the influences of some of the great Funk, Soul and R&B artists such as: James Brown, Herbie Hancock, The Crusaders, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Parliament, Ramsey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, Booker T and The MGs, MFSB, Billy Preston etc. Besides the afore-mentioned styles I have also added a few grooves that are Afro-Caribbean such as: Latin, Reggae and Calypso.
Each of the 100 grooves have been recorded with the piano/keyboard part playing along with a rhythm section of guitar, drums and in many of the grooves, percussion. There is also a three minute Play-A-Long track for each of the 100 grooves minus the piano/keyboard part so that you can practice along with the rhythm tracks adding up to over 5 hours of Play-A-Long tracks.
Wikipedia has a great article about Funk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk
The MIDI files can be obtained separately: contact sales@adgproductions.com
With using software such as the free program Musescore you will be able to do the following with the MIDI files:
1. Slow the tempo down to your skill level.
2. Change the key, allowing you the option of transposing the patterns into keys other than the written key.
3. Use the loop function to practice difficult measures repeatedly.
4. Use these patterns for ear training exercises by slowing the tempo down and looping a certain section repeatedly, try to play the correct notes using your ear rather than reading the music.
Suggestions on how to learn to play the grooves.
Funk rhythms can generally be syncopated so it is important to play the rhythms correctly. I would suggest that before you play any of the grooves, clap the rhythm of the piano/keyboard part counting at a slow tempo preferably with a metronome or drum pattern. Once you feel comfortable with clapping the rhythms then move on to actually play the piano/keyboard part at a slow tempo gradually building up the speed to the tempo of the groove.
I have taught many students who may be advanced in other areas of music but when faced with the syncopated rhythms of funk have difficulty and have gone through the steps that I suggest.
I am grateful and appreciative to all the customers from around the world who everyday are using my publications to study music and I hope that you will find this book a great tool for helping you with your musical development and I welcome any comments that you may have as you work through this book, I can be reached at adgordon@adgproductions.com.
