SCALES AND MODES Major Scales The Minor Scales In addition to the Modes, there are also three different kinds of Minor scales. The Natural Minor scale, and two modified forms of the Natural Minor scale. NATURAL MINOR is the Minor that most people are familiar with.

It is known as the Aeolian Mode. It has the pattern is whole-note-half-note pattern W-H-W-W-H-W-W. HARMONIC MINOR is a modified form of Natural Minor used in the creation of harmonies. Its pattern is W-H-W-W-H-(3 Half Steps)-W. MELODIC MINOR is a modified form of Natural Minor used in the creation of melodies. Melodic minor has two patterns: one ascending and one descending.

Its descending pattern is that of Natural Minor, but its ascending pattern is W-H-W-W-W-W-H. The Blues Scale Now that you have the major and minor scales behind you let us look at some of the modes and scales used in playing the blues. Also, you just learned that the Dorian mode is all the whit notes on the piano from D to D. This means that to play D dorian, all you have to do is start on the second note of the natural scale which is G. One thing to remeber with the modes using C natural as our example is that it's basically playing the G scale. The difference being where you start determining the mode.

In this case determining the D Dorian mode. Now were going to refine this a bit. The Minor Pentatonoc scale is just the Dorian Mode without a few of the notes. So this time, let's jam the D Minor Blues without playing the (E) And here's the big finish! It's a little trickier, but if you add an (Ab) to the D Minor Pentatonoc scale, you finally have the true D Blues scale! I told you this was going to be easy! Country & Western Scale If you thought the Blues was easy, just wait until you try the Country & Western scale in G. But first let's go over a few steps. Also, you just learned that the Mixolydian mode is all the white notes on the piano from G to G.

This means that to play G Mixolydian all you have to do is play from G to G staying in the natural G scale. Now your ready to jam some Country & Western in G Mixolydian
