ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Anyone who has ever had a friend or family member write a book on any topic knows how tedious it is to hear them angst about their deadline every time you ask, How is the book coming along? So I must express my profound appreciation to friends and family for their support over the course of the nine months it took to deliver the first edition of this book in 2014.

I am grateful to Mike DeGive, editor at the Monterey Herald newspaper, as well as the readers of my monthly travel column Away We Go, for never complaining about the diet of Northern Californiaonly destinations I fed them for almost a year.

This book would not have been half as much fun for us or our dog Gypsy had our friends not trusted us with their four-legged children as companions on many of the hikes and models for the chapters. In updating Best Dog Hikes Northern California , David and I had the pleasure of reliving the wonderful adventures that took us to so many distinctly scenic areas of this gorgeous dog-friendly state, this time with our enthusiastic three-and-a-half-year-old Siberian husky, Gem.

After almost thirty-five years as our family veterinarian and friend to all critters, Dr. George Bishop generously continues to be my go-to source of veterinary medicine wisdom.

Last but not least, this book could not have been as thorough without the input from park rangers, Forest Service recreation managers, and volunteers in visitor centers and the cooperation of administrative staff in a variety of public land offices. Diane Garcia at the Science Information Services of the US Geological Survey (USGS) graciously shared her expertise so we could provide the most up-to-date information on maps and navigation.

The many dog loving innkeepers, campground hosts, and restaurant servers enhanced the road trips to the various trailheads.

INTRODUCTION

There arent many places on the planet you could travel to and not get a big, longing smile at the mention of California. It makes sense that the Golden State would have the wild golden trout as a state fish and the dazzling sunset gold poppy as the state flower. The Grizzly Bear on the state flag, alas, is just a memory. Considered a threat, California grizzlies, like wolves, were hunted to extinction. The last grizzly was killed in the Sierra Foothills south of Yosemite in 1922, and the bears prime habitat in the Central Valley all but disappeared. Different habitat needs and their ability to coexist with humans saved the acorn-and berry-eating black bears.

If California was the promised land of milk and honey to early pioneers, and Hollywood the path to fame and fortune, Californias public lands are Shangri-La for hikers and their dogs. The Native American, Mexican, and Spanish legacywith even a trace of Russian heritage from the colonization of 1812 to 1842 on the North Coastgives California its unique flavor.
