T he first time I saw Brian Crimmins Dingbatz, I was entranced. I began my career a calligrapher, and immediately appreciated Brians unique twist on the historic typographic ornamentation I studied as a young scribe, years before I founded Zenspirations. Wonderfully whimsical and delightfully different, Brians delicately shaded, free-form patterned designs charmed me so much that I wanted to share them. I realized there were many ways Dingbatz could be used, from framing a sentiment to adding a touch of elegance to a page layout. I envisioned incorporating them as a design element in a card, bookmark, or other handmade project, and believed the crafting community would embrace this technique.
As the author of more than 20 books, I have a tendency to look at things from the perspective of whether or not they would make a good book, and I knew instinctively that Dingbatz would not only be a great subject for a book, but would also appeal to multiple arts communitiesfrom tanglers and typographers, to book artists and calligraphers, to crafters and doodlers. I am blessed to have a good working relationship with Fox Chapel Publishing, publisher of my Zenspirations series of books, as well as my two most recent books, When You Lose Someone You Love and My Prayer Journal.
Knowing that Fox Chapels acquisitions editor is always looking for new book ideas, and that Brian was onto something special, I introduced them; and the rest, as they say, is history!
Im honored to have been asked to write the foreword for Zentangle Dingbatz, and I know that my studentsas well as many otherswill spend many pleasurable hours designing their own Dingbatz.

I had a lot of fun teaching at Tangle U in Portland in 2018.
Its great to be part of such a strong community.
A week or so after returning home from attending Tangle U, an annual conference by and for Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZTs), I saw a video about something called Dingbatz by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, the founders and creators of the Zentangle method. As Im a big fan of books, layout, typography, lettering, and calligraphy, my attention was captured. As Rick and Maria showed examples and demonstrated some of the ways to create these decorations using tangles, my mind began to race with a multitude of ideas about how they could find their way into so many different projects.
