Dedication
They say it takes a village to raise a child. It surely took a large community of supporters to create this book. Even those who disagreed with some of its content helped strengthen its presentation and the robustness of the material now offered and explained to you.
Everyone who has interacted with me during the development of this book deserves and is gladly given many thanks and much appreciation.
In a similar context, our ability to avoid infection individually, as a nation, and globally, depends on us individually and collectively. That too takes a village.
So, mixing an element of hope with an element of appreciation, thank you , too yes, you, the reader for choosing to become well-informed and hopefully for choosing to make responsible decisions about how to avoid and survive this pandemic.

How to Best Use This Book

Yes, I know. It is a bit sad when it is necessary to explain how to read a book, isnt it! Maybe Im guilty of over-engineering things.
But there are several things I want to advise about.
Footnotes and Links
As well as the main text, the book has 780 footnotes, and within those footnotes are over 620 links to websites. This makes the book a cross-over between a traditional book (either in print or in eBook/Kindle format) and a webpage where you can click on links effortlessly.
Some of these footnotes are not just citing sources, but also provide helpful additional content, and by all means, visit some of the links to better understand and make your own decisions, especially about the more contentious issues to do with the virus.
Ive made the footnotes appear on the page they relate to rather than at the very end of the book. This makes it easier for you to follow both the main text and immediately see the footnotes, rather than needing to be endlessly flipping backward and forwards.
If you have this book in print form, when you want to visit links, youd normally have the challenge of having to type long strings of text into a computer, tablet, or phone. Yes, I know - thats a terrible hassle. If you have this as an eBook, you still might find it awkward to be swapping programs between a Kindle reader and a web browser, and theres the potential of losing your place as you jump backward and forwards.
For people reading the printed book, Ive done two things for you. Firstly , Ive created a link shortener and reduced all the links to short links. For example, instead of typing in a long website name, you can just type a short name that redirects to the actual website and page. Keep in mind, in most browsers, you dont even need to type the https:// part, just type cov.cx/abcd or whatever. That makes things very much easier, I hope. I show both the regular and the short links everywhere, so you know where the short links go.
Possibly even easier is if you go to the https://cov.cx website. On the home page is a simple form where you only need to type in the five or fewer character short link code, which will open up the linked page in a new tab. When youre done, close that new tab, and youre back at the cov.cx home page and able to type in a new code for the next link, and so on. I hope that makes it about as easy as possible!
Secondly , Ive put a page of links up on the books companion website that has all the footnotes from this book, using the same footnote numbering as in the book. Whether youre reading a print edition, or have the eBook on one screen and the webpage links on another, you can easily go to the footnote you want, and click the link no need to type anything at all.
I hope this helps and encourages you to dive deeply into the footnotes and links as well as to better enjoy the main material.
Page Numbers
A not so helpful aspect of the Kindle version of the book are the references to other parts of the book and their page numbers. Thats an artifact from the print book version. Im leaving it in so at least you might have an idea of whether to go a little or a long way forward/backwards, but in such cases, the best thing to do would be to go to the Contents and then click to go to the cited chapter/sub-chapter.
Abbreviations
Most abbreviations are either explained in the text or are well-known and dont need explaining.
In addition, a complete list of abbreviations appears as one of the appendices at the end of the book.
Gender
Rather than write he or she and all other variations of the third person pronouns every time, Im using the masculine form throughout when talking about people in general, and, as they say in legal interpretation, the masculine shall include the feminine. I guess these days it also needs to include, ahem, all the more modern genders, too!
Book Updates
The situation with the virus is changing every day. Some days see small changes, others see major discoveries. It has been very hard to publish this book for month after month, every day I was about to publish, then something new and important came out, and so Id update the book to reflect that, then the next day, another new thing would come out, and so on in a Sisyphean type never-ending process.
So now Im publishing in as up-to-date a fashion as possible, and then I will do two things to help you keep up to date.
First, I publish (usually) twice-weekly updates on the books website. You can choose to have those sent to you for free if you simply join the mailing list.
Second, I will occasionally update the eBook for free. If you have your Amazon update option set, youll get updates automatically. If you have it set for manual updates, youll see information about updates when you list your digital content on Amazon. Ill also show this on the books website, and will mention it in the twice-weekly updates.
Amazons policy on updates is that I can provide free updates until more than 10% of the book has changed, or if something fundamental/major changes. I expect you should be able to get several updates before that happens.
