YOUVE STRUGGLED WITH PROCRASTINATION FOR YEARS. In fact, for as long as you can remember, youve had trouble meeting deadlines, finishing projects, and accomplishing your goals. Youve tried different tactics and techniques for overcoming procrastination, all without much success. Sometimes, youve wondered whether others are rightmaybe the problem is that youre lazy or that you dont have enough discipline. But deep down, you know that there has to be more to procrastination than just not trying hard enough.
Heres the truth: Procrastination isnt about laziness or self-control; its far more complex than that. In fact, its so complex that medical and psychological researchers have been studying the topic for more than 200 years. Research really picked up in the 1950s and has exploded over the past decade, leading to new breakthroughs in our understanding of how procrastination really works. We now know that you cant overcome procrastination through willpower alone and that focusing on just getting stuff done doesnt create sustainable change. Real psychological factors drive procrastination, and understanding them is key to overcoming them.
Thats where this book comes in. Together, well dive deep into the psychology of procrastination. In , well learn how to apply that knowledge to make lasting change. Well tackle specific issues like how to get motivated, follow through, and finish what you start utilizing psychology-based techniques that address the root causes of procrastination. Along the way, well increase our understanding of the brain so that you can work with it, rather than against it.
Since were going on this journey together, I should introduce myself. Im Dr. Hayden Finch, and Im a licensed clinical psychologist. I use research-based strategies to help people master their mental health. My passion for psychology began during my time as an undergraduate at Duke University, where I studied psychology and neuroscience. There, I worked in a memory research laboratory and volunteered at a state psychiatric hospital. Ultimately, I earned my doctorate in psychology with research on how the mind works and how it affects our everyday lives.
Today, I put that knowledge into practice running a mental health clinic, where I help people overcome their greatest mental health hurdles. Ive worked with hundreds of clientspeople with diagnoses ranging from anxiety to psychosis, who are all struggling with issues that run the gamut from perfectionism to procrastination. Youll hear some of their stories in this book (though I have changed their names to protect their privacy). Their experiences have shown me that while procrastination is sometimes benign, its often much more consequential; in extreme cases, it can lead to divorces, bankruptcies, and severe health problems. But it doesnt have to be that way. This book is your resource for finally making lasting change.
While this book contains the information you need to take control of your procrastination, in order to truly make a change, youll need to commit to actually reading it. Procrastinators have a tendency to start books but not finish them, in part because they lose track of why they wanted to read them in the first place. But I know that you really want to create sustainable change, so lets set some good habits from the very beginning. To help yourself start overcoming procrastination right now, take a moment and write down three reasons you want to finish this book.
For real: Get out a piece of paper, write down your reasons, and use the list as your bookmark, or get a sticky note and post it where youll see it every day.
But reading this book alone isnt enoughactually taking action is the most important part. You can do this.
In part 1 well dive into the psychology of procrastination We know full well - photo 3
In part 1, well dive into the psychology of procrastination. We know full well that procrastination causes more problems than it solves, and we get frustrated with ourselves for continuing to procrastinate anyway. But we dont usually understand why we do it. In this section, youll learn why we get stuck in that cycle, as well as all the psychological factors that cause us to repeat problematic behaviors. Plus, well look for some sneaky forms of procrastination that might be causing problems you dont even recognize yet. Then, well answer your most pressing procrastination questions, like Why does procrastination happen? When does it become a problem? And whom does it affect the most?
