Important note: Medicine is an ever-changing science undergoing continual development. Research and clinical experience are continually expanding our knowledge, in particular our knowledge of proper treatment and drug therapy. Insofar as this book mentions any dosage or application, readers may rest assured that the authors, editors, and publishers have made every effort to ensure that such references are in accordance with the state of knowledgeat the time of production of the book.
Nevertheless, this does not involve, imply, or express any guarantee or responsibility on the part of the publishers in respect to any dosage instructions and forms of applications stated in the book. Every user is requested toexamine carefully the manufacturers leaflets accompanying each drug and to check, if necessary, in consultation with a physician or specialist, whether the dosage schedules mentioned therein or the contraindications stated by the manufacturers differ from the statements made in the present book. Such examination is particularly important with drugs that are either rarely used or have been newly released on the market. Every dosage schedule or every form of application used is entirely at the users own risk and responsibility. The authors and publishers request every user to report to the publishers any discrepancies or inaccuracies noticed. If errors in this work are found after publication, errata will be posted at www.thieme.com on the product description page.

The contributors and I took on this project with Thieme to put together a practical and structured guide for pediatric eye surgeries commonly performed by pediatric ophthalmologists. The book will be useful for medical trainees, including medical students, residents, and fellows, to become familiar with the principles and steps of the surgeries before encountering them in the operating room. It will also be useful for surgeons to review the tips and pearls given by the contributors, especially when planning a less-frequently performed procedure. Each section is written by an author with extensive training and experience in the field and provides advanced tips for the procedures described. Alternatives to select procedures are also discussed. Because pediatric ophthalmologists are essentially comprehensive ophthalmologists for infants, children, and teenagers, the book includes procedures within the ophthalmic surgical subspecialties that may be performed by pediatric ophthalmologists.
The first section on strabismus is comprised of ten chapters. The first chapter includes the major goals and principles of all strabismus surgeries, and the subsequent chapters address surgical anatomy for strabismus and the specific surgical steps for various strabismus procedures. Strabismus surgery techniques that are primarily performed in adult patients are not included in this section. The remaining sections cover orbital, anterior segment, glaucoma, and retina procedures. The final chapter on the examination under anesthesia provides organized guidance on preparing for the examination, so that all required equipment and testing are arranged and ready by the time the child is placed under anesthesia. Thiemes Tricks of the Trade series, covering a wide range of subspecialties, is subdivided into sections that address goals, advantages, expectations, key principles, indications, contraindications, preoperative preparation, operative technique, tips and pearls, what to avoid, complications, and postoperative care. Pertinent figures and tables are provided to enhance the understanding of the step-by-step descriptions of the procedures.
