Much more than charm was necessary for us to conduct three years of total-coverage survey in the formidable landscapes of the Kazanlak Valley and Thracian Plain. Serendipity and dedicated Bulgarian partners, who worked tirelessly to convince colleagues about the benefits of survey and procured permits season after season, were the main ingredients to our access to the valley. This volume is evidence of their persistence, willingness to take up a challenge and ability to collaborate despite cultural, linguistic, and methodological differences, bridging disciplinary and administrative boundaries in the process.
