Preface

Other texts assume that first-year composition students already possess the basic skills they will need to succeed in college, but my own experience tells me that this is not true. That is why I wrote Successful College Writing. It uses a unique, highly visual, student-centered approach to teach students the reading and study skills they need while guiding them through the writing strategies and activities that form the core of composition instruction. The overwhelmingly positive response to the first seven editions demonstrates that Successful College Writing fulfills an important need.

The eighth edition continues to meet students where they are and get them where they need to go by building on one of the texts core strengths: its integration of writing and reading instruction as two aspects of the same process. Through consultation with instructors across the country, in-depth conversations with several instructors who run or have run co-requisite (or ALP) programs, and a rethinking of the way annotations are handled, I have worked hard to make the eighth edition more accessible and better than ever at helping instructors address the needs of first-year college students at a variety of levels of preparedness. Achieve with Successful College Writing also helps instructors meet students where they are and get them where they need to go by providing an online course space with tools to help create a supportive writers community in the classroom, whether their classes are in person or online.

New to the Eighth Edition

The main goal of the revision based on feedback from experienced instructors familiar with the needs of todays students was to provide additional support for students who may be underprepared for first-year composition while not neglecting the needs of more college-ready students. With that in mind, this edition pays special attention to academic reading and writing, with the goal of making the kind of reading and writing students are expected to do in college less scary and more doable.

Achieve with Successful College Writing

A dedicated composition space paired with trustworthy content, Achieve with Successful College Writing helps instructors engage students in new ways. Developed to support best practices in commenting on drafts and co-designed with teachers and students from across the country Achieve is a flexible, integrated suite of tools for designing and facilitating writing assignments, with actionable insights that make students progress toward outcomes clear and measurable.
