ABOUT LEE
A self-confessed small business junkie, graphic designer and writer, Lee has played a role in the start up and development of multiple businesses across a range of industries some raging successes, and some not so much! This has given her a global perspective on the world of business, and particularly design and content marketing.
Raised in a self-employed family and married to someone also from a self-employed family, Lee and her husband have been in business for over ten years together. After a major dispute with some business partners who were also family and friends they had to start again from scratch six years ago. They had a newborn, and managed to hold on to their house, but thats it. They got a business loan and pounded the pavement to grow all the businesses they currently have from nothing.
Lee is now the General Manager of their software company Lasso, the Director of their custom software company Kaleidoscope, and the owner and manager of Mac&Co Creative, which specialises in graphic design, design and marketing workshops.
They have also recently started another project called The Family Business Space, and have another smaller business called PC Wrangler, which is an SME and residential mobile IT service.
Lee is also a writer, who started because she felt like there was no-one out there writing realistically about life in business with a family. She wanted to tell her stories so that anyone who felt like they were failing or getting it wrong would be able to see that sometimes thats life. And that its okay. She also wanted people to see that everybody is the architect of their own life, and if you want something or wish something was a certain way, most often it can be if you educate yourself, plan and work for it.
Mum to a six year old and a two year old, Lees days are split between talking about and managing large projects, and kid stuff like chauffeuring, P&C meetings and park dates. She drinks an enormous amount of coffee, and is a crystal-wearing, moon-gazing, corporate hippy who can never find her shoes.
Lee loves what she does, so it makes it really easy to not have a 95, thank-God-its-Friday type life. That said, she has been very strategic in the way her family has set things up so they have time dedicated to the kids, and she does love a day off.
Now, as Lee and her husband Richard raise their young family and manage their growing portfolio of businesses, she is on a mission to share their experiences with brutal honesty, and offer some perspective on the sometimes glamorised world of entrepreneurial families.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Around two years ago someone, or rather someones, took a chance on me and it completely changed my path. Ive been in business for years and writing for longer, my whole life really, but the only articles Id ever published were in the name of other businesses.
That was until the beginning of 2016. Sitting in the back row of a business conference, someone who Id followed since the beginning of my career walked out onto the stage to present. It was Andrew Griffiths, the author of the first business book Id ever purchased, more than ten years earlier.
I found out later that day he was putting together a group of small business writers for a new project, and the minute I heard about it, I knew I needed to be involved. In April 2016 Smallville.com.au was launched into the small business world, and so was I, as me, the writer.
Without the faith and support of Andrew Griffiths, Bree James and Carla Schesser this book wouldnt exist. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. And to all the writers at Smallville.com.au, thank you! Ive met some incredible business owners and people, and through your articles and getting to know you, every one of you has helped to shape who I am in business and on paper today.
And there are so many more people to thank. Every single person Ive met in business has influenced and impacted me in really significant ways and contributed to who am today. But a few specifics:
My husband Richard, who is my biggest supporter.
My babies Grace and Tom (and fur baby Manny) for being the reason I keep going when things get hard.
My family, the McCaffreys and the Krupas, especially my Dad who taught me theres always a way to make it work.
My BFF Karina, who gets truly excited by everything Im doing, even though she hasnt got a clue what Im talking about most of the time!
My business soul mate Shan you knew this was in me, I just had to catch up!
Marcus and Ariel for being the reason I was sitting at that business conference.
And lastly, Michael and the team at Michael Hanrahan Publishing for making this such an easy experience thats been educational and fun at the same time!
A NOTE FROM LEE
Getting here wasnt without its challenges. There were business challenges, financial challenges and, probably the hardest to overcome, confidence challenges. So if youre reading this it means we got here, and it is with enormous gratitude that I say thank you!
This book is designed to be bite-sized. To be picked up and put down frequently by busy business owners, who may only have a couple of minutes a night to get from story start to finish.
I dont pretend to know all there is about business. Even after growing up in a self-employed family, and being in business myself for over ten years, every single day is a learning experience. And that is what these stories are, my journey and experiences in business. What Ive learnt, and how.
So if I ask anything, its that you go into this book open. With an open mind and an open heart. Open to seeing potential areas of improvement in your business and life, and open to change.
No matter how much you know or think you know, theres always something new to learn. A mindset to shift or an area of improvement. And if you only take one thing away, I hope its that you commit to living a life personally and in business by your rules.
