About the Author

Giorgio Cartais Lawrence R. Quarles Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia. He received his Laurea in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cagliari, Italy, in 1980 and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1984. He has authored/co-authored 170 refereed journal articles mainly in the area of adsorption and ion exchange. He has co-authored the first and second editions of the book Protein ChromatographyProcess Development and Scale-Up, Wiley-VCH, 2010 and 2020, and has served as section co-editor of Section 16 Adsorption and Ion Exchange of Perrys Chemical Engineers Handbook, McGraw-Hill, 7th, 8th, and 9th editions. He has served as a member of the Organizing Committee of the International Symposium on Preparative and Process ChromatographyPREP since 1997 and as the PREP Symposium Chair annually since 2009. In addition to his university teaching, he has also been involved extensively in professional education and has been a consultant for a number of chemical and pharmaceutical companies. He has served as chair of AIChE Area 2e Adsorption and Ion Exchange, as chair of AIChE Area 2g Bioseparations, as co-chair of the 2007 Fundamentals of Adsorption ConferenceFOA9, and as a Member of the Board of the International Adsorption Society. He is a Fellow of AIChE and has been recognized with the 2020 AIChE Area 2e Honorary Session.
