Preface
How to Use This Book

This book serves as the core text for your undergraduate media course especially where you are required to make links between practice and theory.

It aims to bring together the analytical and practical elements of media studies. Throughout the book there are topics (such as audience research and mise en scne) that will perhaps be familiar to you from theoretical modules and lectures. Or, there may be topics (such as writing and camerawork) that are first introduced to you during a practical project. These topics are clearly signposted throughout the book, so that you will be able to cross-reference between theory and practice during your course.

The topics will also be contextualised with an employability focus: enabling you to understand the real purpose of supporting practice with theory and vice versa. The main idea behind this book is that if you make stronger links between media practice and media theory, it will ultimately enhance your employability.

The exercises in the book can form the basis of a record of achievement and may be added to an ongoing portfolio. Alternatively, they may simply be exercises that you can initiate yourself to prepare you for a major project. The practical exercises in this book can be used to support your assessed project work and career planning and development.

We want to encourage you to have fun with this book! The more you practise through independent learning, the more you will enhance your professional development, and this may ultimately lead you to a successful career in the media and creative industries.
