Foreword

W e live in an ever-changing world. Our western model of health care can fall short at times when it comes to restoring health, for a variety of reasons, but sometimes one of those reasons can be partially attributed to rising health care costs.

Integrative Medicine involves the examination and integration of knowledge and techniques from numerous branches of health care and delivering this individualized combination to a patient in a treatment setting. I have served as the Fellowship Director in two respected Integrative Medicine Fellowship groups over the past 15 years: The Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine and the University of Arizona Fellowship in Integrative Medicine. I believe that Integrative Medicine offers an innovative approach to helping more people achieve health and wellbeing.

In this book, Dr. Amy Dayries, a former student of mine, has crafted a program that allows one to systematically move through a series of self-help and over-the-counter techniques that include herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and dietary strategies to help one achieve a better nights rest. She explores the medical research that supports about a variety of medical and dental devices currently available for the sleep-deprived individual. Amy connects the overwhelming number of health issues that can be created or worsened when one does get regular restorative sleep, and offers an integrative approach to helping people of any background and on any budget, achieve better sleep.

This book is a wonderful contribution to increasing the awareness of the many factors that affect sleep and providing individuals with a step-by-step strategy for improving their sleep and explaining when one should turn to a medical or dental practitioner for assistance. There is no question that when one experiences regular restorative sleep, ones health, energy, mood and overall wellbeing improves. Powerful medicine indeed! I highly recommend it.

Khaled Hosseini

W hy wont my husband stop snoring, and should I be concerned?

My kids are telling me that I am snoring, and I am embarrassed.

These are two common complaints I often hear from my dental patients.

I am a dentist who wants to share with you how you can solve your sleep concerns. Sometimes, there are over-the-counter remedies that make a difference. Other times, a variety of techniques customized by a health provider are better for the individual.

In todays healthcare environment, patients are savvy and often know instantly when something sounds too good to be true or too much like a sales pitch. Patients and health providers alike can read research (some worthy and some that is not as credible) on the internet. When it comes to paying for information that will lead to good sleep, people are willing to pay more if the solution makes sense for the problem at hand. Since many chronic health problems of today can be traced back to an origin that involves less than optimal sleep, a variety of solutions ought to be made available so the patient can select what fits their lifestyle and budget.

Not getting good sleep has huge long-term health implications. It goes way beyond complaining about your loved ones annoying sleep habits. Being able to sort normal from abnormal conditions is critical to a healthy lifestyle. In this book, I will explore symptoms you should be aware of for yourself and others, and ways to test yourself at home to verify if you need professional help.

Dentists are often the first healthcare professional to point out to you that you may have a sleep issue because we will see evidence of tooth grinding, a scalloped tongue, or can spot a deviated septum. We dentists know that sleep can be frequently managed very well with an oral appliance.

However, sleep problems are handled in a very interesting way in todays healthcare world. First of all, only a physician can legally diagnose a sleep problem. Often, the physicians only way to treat sleep is to prescribe sleeping pills, perform surgery on a patient, or place the patient permanently on a CPAP machine to address an airway concern. However, what this paradigm is missing is that there are often natural solutions and dental completely in a gentle way. These methods have not been presented to the public under the umbrella of complete sleep solutions offerings before.

In this book, I will present all sleep paradigms: medical, natural (herbal, vitamin, and lifestyle), and the dental sleep appliances (of which there are many that address various types of sleep problems). This way, you can decide your best path or can choose to combine several methods. I will explores what good, healthy sleep looks like, and what factors may be contributing to why a person has a sleep problem. You will discover over-the-counter natural sleep remedies, connect diet and lifestyle to their potential why or issue, and can learn what might be a warning sign where professional help is a must. The professional help mentioned can come from several sources and is often a team approach for best results. You will learn about the protocol I use with my dental patients that has had proven results for better sleep.

Chapter 1:
Snoring Is Such a Common Problem

Laugh and the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone.

Anthony Burgess

S usan came in and slumped into the dental chair. She didnt exude her usual exuberance or smile. Susan is thirty-seven years old, a married working mother of three kids. She is really busy and goes a hundred miles an hour all the time. She is typically polished and enthusiastically sharing news about her sporty kids, her work in the IT world, or the latest with her husband. But this day was different. I exclaimed, Wow, your energy just isnt what it usually is. She retorted, My husband is snoring every night, and its wrecking my sleep! I dont know how much longer I can put up with it. Im even sleeping in the guest room occasionally just so I can better my chance of getting some decent sleep. I just dont know what to do. Ive tried everything I can think of, and often my husband (Brad) thinks Im just nagging him. I feel like Im becoming this pestering, hysterical wife, and he doesnt want to try my suggestions. Sigh! A few years ago, I would have been less equipped to help Susan. But today, I can offer her useful advice from a variety of approaches. Thats what this book is about.
