I grew up in Columbia, Maryland, a suburb directly between Baltimore and Washington, DC, in the 1980s. Food wasnt a defining part of my childhood, but as necessity would have it, it was always there. Some of my earliest memories involve food: watching my mother bake elaborate cakes from a 1950s Betty Crocker booklet, snacking on astronaut ice cream at the Baltimore Science Center, and learning how to bake mandel bread with my grandma, Zelda. One time I asked her what the difference was between mandel bread and biscotti and her reply was Jennifer, Jewish people dont eat biscotti . I wasnt a picky eater; that was my brother, Dave. I basically liked to eat everything.
