Hello! Im Wendy McCallum: real food coach and nutrition educator, cookbook author, happily recovering lawyer and the mom of two excellent, creative, active (and perpetually hungry) kids. Thanks for cracking open my latest book! Ill bet youre curious to see if theres anything different in here from all the other books youve read, and if this might finally be the approach that actually works for you. Im also guessing youre a woman, most likely a fellow mom, and while youve got some changes you would like to make to your diet, youd also love to improve your whole familys food. Youve probably already started dabbling with real or clean food ingredients and recipes, but have yet to make very many changes that have stuck. You may even have tried some of the more popular extreme approaches to weight loss and wellness, such as paleo, gluten-free or vegan, but those changes were really hard to make and even harder to maintain, not to mention they might not have thrilled your whole family. Am I on the right track?

What youre really looking for is a simple, healthy approach that will work to get you to all your goals whether were talking about your personal weight and wellness or your familys food and allow you to realistically maintain them for life. You want something that works with your familys busy life, while being flexible, kid-friendly and (gasp, dare you even wish it?) fun. Youre not looking for a radical, instant solution, but instead have accepted the fact that real, lasting change, in the family kitchen and on the scale, comes with the slow and steady building of positive habits. Chapter 1 What My Approach Can Do for You

Whats different this time? Why will my program work for you when your other best efforts havent led to lasting change? Because this time, you can actually do it, just like the hundreds of other real moms who have already used my approach to permanently lose weight, increase their energy and build better family food habits.

My program sets you up for success. It doesnt involve unpleasant deprivation, strange ingredients, weird flavours, superhuman kitchen skills or even fancy equipment. Its based on the time-tested truth that nothing too extreme or complicated ever works for very long. Lets face it: were all leading really busy lives and need a straightforward, simple approach that will work for the whole family and keep us sane. No mom wants (or should have) to put more than one healthy meal on the table at a time. Whos got the time for that?

Most of the moms I meet and work with have two parallel food goals: to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and to get their whole family consistently eating better, less-processed food. Moms are frustrated by a diet industry that is often impractical and extreme, advocating a quick-fix approach. My program gives you everything you need to get yourself to a healthy body weight or maintain it if you are already there without eating different food from the rest of your family and without counting points, carbs or calories. If youre like most women of our generation, you grew up with a mother who was always on a diet. Its critical that we break that cycle for our children, and thats just another benefit of my approach: nobody even needs to know youre trying to lose weight. Youll sell the changes to your family for the really important reasons healthy food matters increased energy, immunity and wellness. Youll role model healthy eating and use my tested, effective (and fun!) strategies to get your spouse and kids on board and involved. Chapter 2 My Approach

My approach is all about real food. Its a simple program designed to build a set of healthy, lifelong habits for you and your family. Real foods have one ingredient, or are made entirely of one-ingredient foods. If it doesnt need a label, or if it has a label with ingredients you can imagine growing in nature, chances are its real. If its got a label and a bunch of unpronounceable and unidentifiable ingredients, chances are its not.

What could be simpler than a diet made up of real, pronounceable, readily available foods? And real food isnt just easy, its also delicious. Ive spent loads of time in the kitchen perfecting simple recipes with real ingredients that taste great so that you dont have to. Youre about to become an expert at using a wide variety of real foods to make absolutely delicious and satisfying meals.

A real food diet will help you get to a healthy weight, but we all know permanent change comes only when were motivated by more than the number on the scale. When I teach people about the real connection between food and energy levels, immunity and disease prevention, they start to notice the positive changes in their own wellness that come with improvements to their diet. This book will help you recognize these changes in your wellness and youll see them in family members too. Youll find it easier to maintain weight loss and continue your new habits, because youll feel healthier. And who doesnt want that?

So what does this real food program really involve? Keeping it simple, I use the macronutrients (or big nutrients) we need to stay alive as my food groups: carbohydrates, protein and fat. Once youre eating these three food groups in better balance, youll experience increased energy, steady moods and more even blood-sugar patterns. This approach also keeps you feeling full for even longer and reduces carbohydrate and sugar cravings, which makes it so much easier to remain on track with healthy food choices. As an added bonus, it tends to keep the rest of your family on a more even keel. Youll even see more predictable behaviour from toddlers to teenagers!
