In this book, were going to explore 25 projects you can create, including home dcor, apparel and gifts. If youre already a pro, youll find some new skills and designs to help take your hobby to the next level. Well begin with the basicsFaux Calligraphyin our first project, then build on our skills, adding to them as we go. In the back of the book, youll find resources like sample alphabets and detailed supply lists to help as you create. Plus, you get to use colors and styles that match the things you already own.

WRITING TOOL: Chalk Marker
SURFACE: Slate Serving Tray
TECHNIQUE: Faux Calligraphy
Bringing our hand lettering into the kitchen is a great way to make the heart of the home extra warm and welcoming. In this project, were going to look at lettering on a slate serving tray. Trays can be both functional and decorative, and there are so many ways to personalize them. For example, what better way to let guests know what youre serving than to letter the names of the foods and beverages theyll be enjoying? Using a liquid chalk marker allows us to get a smooth, professional look while keeping our written messages erasable and nontoxic. Im going to walk you through exactly how to create Faux Calligraphy to give your writing the look of Brush Script, the most popular form of hand lettering. Then you can follow the instructions to customize your own serving trays to say anything you like!
YOULL NEED
- Pencil and eraser
- Chalk marker(s)
- Slate serving tray(s)
- Clean, damp cloth
- Clear glossy or matte acrylic sealer (optional)
Brush Script is what we call the lettering style in which each individual letter is formed with a combination of thick and thin lines. This can be done with a tool called a brush pen, which creates different types of lines as a reaction to the amount of pressure you apply to it while writing. However, most brush pens are ideal only for writing on paper surfaces. So, when we want to letter on other types of materials, like our slate serving tray, we have to find ways to make our tools (like chalk markers, paint markers and more) create the same effect.
The method well be using to do this is called Faux Calligraphy, and its very easy to do. If youre already a pro at this skill, you can hop over to step 2. If not, heres a quick tutorial to get you started. Well be using Faux Calligraphy for many of the projects in this book, so its a good idea to spend some time practicing and learning it. First, we write a word in cursive (Image 1A). You may want to leave a little extra space between your letters so that you have room for the next part of the process.
The next step is to locate the downstrokes in each letter. Every time we write, our pen moves across the paper in one of three basic ways: up, across or down. When our pen is moving up and away from us, that is an upstroke. When it goes across the paper, that is a horizontal stroke. And when it moves down toward us, that is a downstroke. Downstrokes are the parts of the letter that are made of thick lines; upstrokes and horizontal strokes remain thin. Once you understand this concept, you know the big secret behind beautiful Brush Script lettering (which well dive into more . That way youll know youre thickening the correct parts of your words.
