I met Sambit in the early days of Julia. In fact, our first email exchange focused around all the improvements Julia needed in order to become a useful language for data scientists and programmers. In the last few years, Julia has continued to grow and in 2018, the community released Julia 1.0. Over those years, Sambit has made several contributions to several Julia packages for which the Julia community is always grateful. However, code is not sufficient to build a community. It is equally important to have high quality documentation and books that help programmers learn a new language. Hands on Julia Programming is a valuable contribution to a young, modern and exponentially growing language.

The Why question is always the most interesting one for anything new. Why did the creators create a new language? Why does it matter? Often, once you understand the motivation that drives an innovation, the rest is easy to follow. Hands on Julia Programming does a great job with setting the stage and getting the reader to really understand the reason and motivation behind Julia. The footnotes that point to JuliaCon presentations and interviews are equally interesting.

From there, Sambit takes the reader through a journey, with hands on the keyboard and covering a lot of ground starting with installing Julia, running the customary Hello, World, notebooks, language fundamentals and standard library. The second module covers IDEs, development practices and deployment, whereas the third module covers Julia packages for various data science tasks such as data manipulation, text analysis and deep learning.

Given that Julia solves the two-language problem by combining performance and productivity in one language and that mathematics and machine learning are integral to just about everything, Hands on Julia Programming provides a quick on ramp for programmers to learn Julia and also participate in the open-source community.
