Introduction
Welcome, romance writers!
Within this book youll find more than 176 lovingly crafted ideas to inspire characters, stories, situations and locations. Weve even given you some instant, ready-made storylines that you can base your own stories on.
Youll also find plenty of insider tips and expert advice to help you improve your writing, write faster, get your work published, and much more.
Youre welcome to use these ideas exactly as weve written them, or you can adapt them in any way that you wish. For example, you could use them as a starting point for your own ideas, and let your imagination wander. That could lead to your own cast of unique and individual characters, brand new stories, and all sorts of interesting and exotic locations to thrill your readers.
Dont forget to check out the other books in this series (turn back a couple of pages to see the full list). We have tons of great ideas to help you improve your writing skills and craft, edit your work, sell and market it, overcome writers block and rejection, find a publisher, or publish your books yourself, and much more.
Our collection of travel ideas might be just the thing if you want to set your stories in foreign lands.
And, of course, the romance genre itself spans multiple sub-genres. If youre interested in writing a romantic comedy, for example, youll definitely want to have a look at our collection of comedy ideas. On the other hand, if romantic thrillers are more your cup of tea, we have thriller ideas too. Or how about writing historical romances? Theyre hugely popular, and we have a terrific collection of historical ideas. Romance in space? Or in the future? Or in an alternative universe? Check out our collection of science fiction ideas! Im sure you get the idea.
The romance genre is huge and wonderfully versatile. You can combine the ideas in this book with those from any of the other genres. And that will give you an endless, unlimited supply of brilliant ideas for fresh new characters and intriguing and unusual plots that will leave your readers wanting more.
And thats a good thing, because not only is romance the most popular genre in the world, but the novels that sell best are the ones that form part of a series. So the more ideas you have, the more books you can write and the more money you can make!
Good luck!
And happy, successful, and profitable writing!

Part 1: Ideas
1. A to Z of heroines
If youre looking for a long-term challenge, how about writing 26 romantic novels where the heroines first name begins with a different letter of the alphabet? Start with A (Anna?) and work through to Z (Zoe?). You could even use her first name as the title of the book.
To help the series flow, and to help with the marketing, you could have the person who will be the main character in your next book appear as a minor (but very intriguing) character in the current one. Your readers will look forward to reading your next book so they can find out more about her.
You could bring some of these people back as minor characters in later stories, though I wouldnt attempt to put all 26 of them in one story as it would be far too confusing.
2. An easy romantic story
An easy way to create a romantic story is to think of two people and put them together in a risky and risqu situation. You can then think about what happened before that time, how they found themselves in this current situation, and what happens afterward. That will give you the whole story.
When you put them in this potentially compromising (but fun) situation, think about what stage theyre at in their relationship. Is it the first time theyve met? Have they known each other for years but only as friends, neighbors or colleagues? Have they been dating for a while (perhaps secretly) but have only just found the opportunity to take things further? Did they make their feelings for each other clear in the past, but they were unable to be together until now?
And, since the situation is such a risky and potentially compromising one, what would happen if they got caught? Will that happen in your story?
3. Autobiographies
Read a few autobiographies of the rich and successful. Not only do they reveal how they built up successful careers and lifestyles often from humble beginnings they often talk about how they met their partners. They describe the often-rocky path to success which could make the perfect plot for your story or series. And they also talk about other relationships that began and ended, tangled love affairs, and eventually a stable, loving marriage. You rarely get such a fantastic opportunity to study real lives in such intimate detail. These books make excellent research tools and inspiration devices for romantic novelists. Its well worth making the most of them.
