According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke kills nearly 150,000 of the 860,000 Americans who die of cardiovascular diseases each yearthat is 1 in every 19 deaths from all causes. The southeastern United States has the highest death rates from stroke. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of serious long-term disability. This is disturbing because about 80 percent of strokes are preventable. Every year, about 800,000 people in the United States have a strokeand about 1 in 4 of those strokes are recurrent strokes.

Stroke Sourcebook, Fifth Edition provides detailed information about stroke, its causes and types such as ischemic, hemorrhagic, and cerebral aneurysm.
