Stroke is a largely preventable disease and in the twenty-first century it is a very treatable disease, but it remains the third most frequent cause of death (after heart disease and cancer) in developed countries and is fast becoming a similar scale problem for the developing world. Why is it that a disease which kills so many and leaves others with devastating disability is not a higher priority for health services, researchers, and the community? Professor Richard Lindley sums up the challenge eloquently in this book when he says Imagine the excitement if cancer doctors found a cure for most cancers. The fact is that we face a global crisis in non-communicable disease, of which stroke is a major contributor, and yet we effectively have the cure but are failing future generations by not implementing evidence-based medicine that we know saves and improves the lives of stroke patients.
This second edition of The Facts Stroke aims to educate health students, stroke support workers, and anyone with a personal connection to stroke about this disease, its causes, treatments, and recovery pathways, and how to prevent it long term. Richard writes in an honest, open, and conversational manner which makes the text accessible to a broad audience and reflects his extensive professional knowledge of stroke. The book is grounded in evidence with each chapter referencing further reading for the studious and key points for those who want a quick refresh of the principal facts. However, this is more than a factual overview of stroke; the many case studies and personal reflections demonstrate a deep human insight into this disease and its impact on patients of all ages and their families.
The fact that stroke diagnosis and treatment have moved on sufficiently to warrant a revised edition of this book within nine years of publication is heartening. message remains critical and one which needs increased community education if we are to see more patients accessing this game-changing treatment.
However, despite such impressive treatment advances in the past decade, the book emphasizes that access to a dedicated stroke unit remains the gold standard for stroke treatment and rehabilitation globally. Thus the benefits of a specialized and educated multi-disciplinary team providing a holistic approach to patient care which includes physical, psychological, and social support remains the best chance for a meaningful recovery from stroke. Sadly, as Richard states, medically speaking, stroke units are a new phenomenon and have yet to be widely implemented, especially in developing countries where the number of stroke unit beds per head of population is woefully inadequate to meet demand, resulting in many patients facing significant and ongoing disability.
