Acknowledgments
I have to say that working with Megg Morin, my acquisitions editor, gets better and better every year. As a matter of fact, she doesnt even crack the whip (much) anymore. Actually, the best thing that can be said of any acquisitions editor (and I should know, having been one in a previous life), is that I sometimes forget shes there. Of course, I remember as soon as I run into a problem, and Im happy to say that then, shes always there (the second best thing you can say about an acquisitions editor).
Every year I sigh a sigh of relief when Bobbi Sandberg, the technical editor on this book, signs on again. Her QuickBooks expertise is unparalleled and she has the perfect editors toucha rare combination.
Lisa McCoy, my copy editor, has that thankless job of making me look good (well, my writing, at any rate). Fortunately for me she does a great job, and for that, I thank her.
I dont know why, but every year, when I finally get a copy of the book in my hand, Im amazed at how great the finished product is. Its then that I realize how thankful I am to have such a talented and dedicated production team working behind the scenes.
Finally, there is Jody McKenzie, my editorial supervisor, without whom this book would never see the light of day. Shes the one who ensures that the book makes it through the editorial and production processesnot always an easy job, especially with a cantankerous author. For that I thank her, along with Vasundhara Sawhney, who is the project manager.
Introduction
QuickSteps books are recipe books for computer users. They answer the question How do I? by providing quick sets of steps to accomplish the most common tasks in a particular program. The sets of steps are the central focus of the book. Notes, Tips, and Cautions augment the steps. The brief introductions are minimal rather than narrative, and numerous illustrations and figures, many with callouts, support the steps.
QuickSteps books are organized by function and the tasks needed to perform that function. Each function is a chapter. Each task, or QuickSteps To, contains the steps needed for accomplishing the function, along with relevant Notes, Tips, Cautions, and screenshots. Tasks will be easy to find through
The table of contents, which lists the functional areas (chapters) and tasks in the order they are presented
A QuickSteps To list of tasks on the opening page of each chapter
The index with its alphabetical list of terms used in describing the functions and tasks
Color-coded tabs for each chapter or functional area, with an index to the tabs just before the table of contents
