THE EDITORS AND HUNDREDS OF HEADS BOOKS
Introduction
My first real job was the best first job anyone could have had. Yet, the path there was not what I had imagined or planned. When I was graduating from college, I intended to spend a year in Israel and needed a summer job to earn money. A great job had fallen through, but I dried my tears and visited the career center at my college. I arrived at the moment the advisor was talking with a new company looking for a summer intern. I got the job. By the end of the summer, my employer made me an offer I couldnt refuse, and I decided to stay in the States. I was the 17th employee, the company was growing quickly, and I quickly took on a lot of responsibility for a 22-year-old. The people I worked with became close friends. This wasnt according to my plan, but it was exactly the right thing for me.
Since college, Ive been interested in the question of how to make work work for people and for organizations, and thats what drives me in my career today. I could never have predicted or charted out the path that took me from computer science major to expert on career transitions and leadership.
At the beginning of your career, have a goal in mind, but be flexible. Take the process seriously, but dont take yourself too seriously. Youll be surprised where the journey of work will take you.
Most important, dont forget to have a life at the same time. Work is very important: it pays your bills, it helps you achieve your goals, and some of you will even be able to express your passion and your lifes purpose through your work. But work isnt the only thing, so dont forget to relax, and have fun along the way.
RICKI FRANKEL

I clearly remember my first job; a sales associate at a national retail store catering to teenage girls. The only real responsibility Id ever had before this job was going to school every day, being a good student, and making my parents proud. Of course, on many days even these simple tasks seemed like a chore.
My first job turned out to be a rude awakening: A set schedule; clocking in and out; rules and regulations; a supervisor hovering over me and monitoring my every move; only a half-hour for lunch and no play breaks; dealing with the personalities and idiosyncrasies of my co-workers; and handling rude customers. Now I knew why my mother said I should not be in a hurry to grow up!
I not only survived my first job; I eventually became the assistant manager for the store. My experiences there helped me decide to become a lawyer. Now I spend my time helping companies create positive and dynamic work environments for their employees. And because Ive been there myself, I can pursue my specialty with purpose and passion.
When I started my first job there was no guide to show me how to handle it. Like many others, I learned through trial by fire. This book, with its blend of expert advice and real stories from others who have survived their first jobs, can help you avoid possible pitfalls and build a positive and successful experience in your first, second, and every job.

ANGELA REDDOCK
Plastics, Benjamin: What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?
Congratulations! You are about to enter the adult world of work. The process of looking for a job can feel like a roller-coaster ride. Its filled with ups and downs, unexpected twists and turns; its exhilarating one moment and frightening the next. Job hunting (and later, as youll find out, job holding), is just not the same as applying to college or getting a summer internship. If you feel as if youve stepped into a bizarre new world, this chapter will assure you that what you are experiencing is normal, everything will turn out OK, and, most likely, you will get a job; and after that, another job, too.

Choosing which career path to follow is the first step in this process. Keep in mind that there is no one perfect career; many different paths can help you get to your goal. Any one academic major can lead to many different careers, and you can reach a particular career through many different majors. At this point, dont worry if you dont know exactly what you want to do. The only way to discover whether a particular field is right for you is to get out there, talk to people, and start doing something. If you pay attention to what you like and what you are good at, one thing will lead to another, and you will eventually find yourself in a job and a career you enjoy.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE. Enjoy your work. This doesnt mean that youll wake up every morning excited about going to work. I dont know anyone like that who isnt on prescription drugs. Life is life, no matter what you do.
SARA WALKER
FIRST, FIND OUT WHAT you like to do. Take an aptitude test and do a lot of research before you jump into anything. Look at as many alternatives as you can. Find a mentor to help you with the process. Do informational interviews. People love to talk about what they do.
