O NE LINGUIST ESTIMATES that approximately ten percent of individuals who learn English actually reach fluency. Only ten percent. Thats a dismally low percentage.

So why does the average English student fail to attain fluency, basically gives up and toss all that time and energy away by not taking that knowledge to step further?

Most people dont achieve their goal because they dont dive in to make the full commitment. Unlike academic learning of math, science or history, you cant learn English and then confine it to one corner of your life and pull it out when you need it.

Thats not how it works. If you use this strategy, it definitely wont work well for you...

No, you must immerse yourself in the language twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Yes, you must live and breathe English, think in English and even dream in English.

This is not an overstatement. Far too many people either underestimate the amount of real work necessary to speak English like a native or just dont want to give that much time to kick their efforts up a notch or two to full mastery.

When they discover that they must wrap themselves up in the English language like a blanket, they shut down and while they may not totally walk away, they certainly lower their goals and their standards.

Not wanting to give it their all is only one reason why people fail to kick their efforts to that next step. But, there are yet several other reasons why nearly ninety percent of students fail in their attempts, one of them being they didnt plan ahead.

These people are well-meaning and without a doubt well-intended by they never thought ahead far enough to imagine they would have to actually give themselves over to English. Thats a large commitment, one they hadnt planned on.

Too many individuals decide to learn English on a whim, or because their friends are learning the language. Before you take another step toward fluency, perhaps you should discover if you have a good plan for the rest of your studies.

Why Do You Desire Fluency?
Picture 10

F IRST, YOU NEED TO spend a bit of time alone and analyze your reasons why you wanted to learn the language in the first place. Did your parents or spouse pressure you? Are you feeling the pressure from your workplace to do this? Maybe this will make you a more valuable employee. Or, maybe you were threatened you would never get a promotion if you didnt learn the language.

The most effective motive, as you well know, is that youre doing it not to satisfy any supervisor, spouse, parent or even educational requirement. Youre learning English because you want to. Youve made the decision, not some force outside of you.

Thats the only reason actually to learn anything. But its also one of the best ways to ensure youll become one of the ten percent who reach fluency.

The majority of people go out of their way to seek out the easiest and quickest ways to fix problems. Youve probably learned by now that there isnt a quick or easy way to conquer English and speak it like a native. If you want to learn it, youll have to plan for it.

Its not too late to take what you have learned up to this point regardless your level of learning and recommit yourself to taking it to the next level. Your future, after all, has always been in your hands.

Use your Imagination
Picture 14

S OME LINGUISTS CONTEND students dont reach fluency because they fail to use their imagination in the learning process. These experts describe the students as the type who believe that its enough to learn English from textbooks memorizing the grammar rules or just going through and routinely completing the exercises in the textbook.

In other words, they see the extent of their learning as the several times a week when they enter a classroom and are called upon to either read or speak.

There is no way anyone can learn another language in this manner, let alone master it. No, as one expert so wonderfully phrased it, fluency is a dance, an art, a practice and a passion.

In order to fully master English, he said, the student must use his imagination to create a personalized learning style.

What this expert is saying is that you must imbue your road to conquering the language with your own purposes, your own meaning. Are you using your imagination? Here are just a few quick ways to tell if youre exercising it while youre learning. You should be having fun. Learning the language should fill you with excitement. But most of all you should be using all of your natural abilities throughout the learning process.
