A to Zoo: Subject Access to Childrens Picture Books has been the premier resource for teachers, librarians, parents, and anyone planning programs for young people. It was created by John and Carolyn Lima in the early 1980s and is now one of the most highly regarded reference books in school and public libraries.
John and Carolyn Limas creation has served generations of readers and provides the foundation for future editions and users. Rebecca L. Thomas continues the tradition established by the Limas. Dr. Thomas has a PhD in Early and Middle Childhood Education from the Ohio State University. She retired in 2011 after 35 years as an elementary school librarian in the Shaker Heights City Schools.
She has also been a university teacher and author in the field of childrens literature. A to Zoo continues to be the single best source for locating childrens picture books by subject, both for personal use and for supporting programming and curricular needs. ARBAonline, October 1, 2014 The importance of the picture book, long a source of delight and learning for young readers, continues today with the increasing emphasis on early childhood education and on reading, and with the need for supervised childcare for working parents. Teachers, librarians, and parents are finding the picture book an important learning and entertainment tool. Even with todays computerized library catalogs, choosing the right book for a particular program or need can be time-consuming and frustrating without some guidance. The specialized subjects in A to Zoo give librarians, teachers, and parents easy access to books that will meet the needs of their patrons and their programs.
Public librarians organizing thematic programs, school librarians and teachers looking for curriculum connections, and parents planning learning experiences for home-schooling or for reading enjoyment will find using A to Zoo provides a time-saving, up-to-date resource focused on specific needs and interests. The 10th edition of A to Zoo: Subject Access to Childrens Picture Books has 19,716 titles cataloged under 1,223 subjects. Several library collections served as guides in the selection process, including the San Diego Public Librarythe collection that served as the original resource for early editions of A to Zoo. Also examined was the catalog of the CLEVNET libraries in Ohio, which includes the Cleveland Public Library along with numerous independent libraries in northeastern Ohio, and the collections of the Cuyahoga County Public Library system. School library collections were also explored, including those of the Shaker Heights (Ohio) City schools and other schools in northeastern Ohio. Standard reviewing sources were also consulted, including School Library Journal and Booklist.
Titles with copyright dates in the 2000s are generally included, while titles with earlier dates have been checked for availability. Out-of-print titles are retained because public and school library collections are largely retrospective. Folktales, poetry, and informational picture books in particular are maintained in many libraries along with books about holidays and seasons. Popular titles from beloved authors and illustrators will still be found here, regardless of the copyright date. New titles from 2016 and 2017 have been added to this edition along with the titles in the Supplement to the 9th Edition (2016). Many sources were consulted to select titles for inclusion, including the library collections mentioned above, along with published reviews and review copies from publishers.
The picture book, as it is broadly defined within the scope of this book, is a fiction or nonfiction title with illustrations occupying as much or more space than the text and with text, vocabulary, or concepts suitable for preschool through grade two. It is noted, however that picture books appeal to a wider audience; adults, older children, and others often find picture books enjoyable, useful, and informative. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK A to Zoo can be used to obtain information about childrens picture books in two ways: to learn the titles, authors, and illustrators of books on a particular subject, such as dragons or weddings; or to ascertain the subject (or subjects) when only the title, author and title, or illustrator and title are known. For example, if the title Marigold bakes a cake is known, this volume will enable the user to discover that Marigold bakes a cake is written by Mike Malbrough, illustrated by the author, published by Philomel in 2017, and that the subject areas are: Activities baking, cooking. Animals cats. Birds. Birds.
Character traits orderliness. Character traits perfectionism. For ease and convenience of reference use, A to Zoo is divided into five sections: Subject Headings Subject Guide Bibliographic Guide Title Index Illustrator Index Subject Headings: This section contains an alphabetical list of the subjects cataloged in this book. The subject headings reflect the established terms used commonly in public libraries, originally based on questions asked by parents and teachers and then modified and adapted by librarians. To facilitate reference use, and because subjects are requested in a variety of terms, the list of subject headings contains numerous cross-references. Subheadings are arranged alphabetically under each general topic, for example: Animals (general topic) Animals apes
