It has been said that while a magician often is an expert at sleight of hand a mentalist is an expert of sleight of mind. While this is something the mentalist may want his audience to believe the reality is quite different. Magic and mentalism like many things in life is about perception. Often the mentalist uses various sleight of hand techniques to achieve his ends and indeed some mentalists including the author were magicians for many years before they took up mentalism. In my publication In Mind: Lessons in Mindreading and Mentalism I said in the introduction - Mentalism or Mind Reading is the most exciting performing art. Once you dazzle your friends, family and acquaintances with a series of devastating seemingly psychic feats they will forever hound you until you agree to give an encore. Wherever you go you will be pursued, pested and plagued by people who yearn to see you perform. It will change your life forever. This has been my experience my whole adult life. It is a wonderful thing.A mentalist is a magician of the mind. And like a good magician he/she creates a sense of wonder, amazement and awe in an audience. However despite what has been said - it has less to do with moves and sleights and more to do with relationship the relationship between the performer and the audience where magic is made, astonishment ensues and time stops,I have said before that there is a distinction between magic and mentalism and although they achieve similar ends (ie awe and astonishment), while the magician appears to do the impossible the mentalist does the very unlikely the extremely unlikely. For this reason mentalism appears more real than traditional magic. People believe there is more than mere trickery going on. They go away seeing your performance as something no one could do by magic tricks.Like in my previous publications How to be a Mentalist, How to be a Mentalist II, How to be a Mentalist III (Mentalism with Playing Cards) How to be a Mentalist IV: Impromptu Mindreading, In Mind, Time Flies, McCoys Miracles: World Class Card Magic. McCoys Miracles II and McCoys Miracles III, I also offer here something rather unique and of supreme value to the student. Every routine has a video link to both performances and explanations. There are also links to teaching the various sleight of hand techniques necessary for the execution of these powerhouse routines. In effect the student is getting a DVD as well as written explanation. Also like previous publications this is high class professional material most of it original with the author who has been performing for over 20 years professionally on both sides of the Atlantic and has been involved in the art of magic and mentalism for 40 years since he was a child.Material of this nature is usually released by magic dealers at very high prices and the author has been criticised. He believes however that if a routine is sold for 30 or 1 - the buyer will either learn it or discard it depending on their commitment to learning our ancient art.So get ready for the second instalment of In Mind and be prepared to take mentalism and mindreading to a new level.

Duplication

What the audience experiences

A spectator is given a business card and pen. She is asked todraw something on the card but to keep this to herself. Thementalist touches the back of the card to get a mental vibe as towhat has been drawn. He then puts the card face down on the table.(Or in another version very fairly and openly puts the card unseeninto his pocket). Next the mentalist takes a blank card and drawssomething. He places the card down without showing his drawing. Thecard from the table is picked up and for the first time thespectators drawing is shown. The spectator turns over thementalists card he has drawn the very same thing.

How it is done

Drawing duplications are a staple of mentalism and mostmentalists will have a routine in their act. The nice thing aboutthis is it can be done intimately and with just a few businesscards and a pen. There are two simple moves that enable thismiracle to take place which are very easy to do. 1. you turn overthe business cards in your left hand. 2. you palm a business cardwith your right hand.

Lets backtrack. Before you begin you have a bunch of businesscards say seven or eight. You need to reverse two business cardson the bottom so if you turned them completely over they wouldlook the same.

So you have a bunch of cards with two reversed on the bottom.Give the spectator a card and ask her to draw something on thecard. As she does this you palm a card in your righthand.

Once they have finished drawing you ask them to place theircard on your bunch drawing unseen. Just put out your left handwhich holds the business cards she should place the card she justwrote on on your business cards if not just say I do not wantto know what is written I just want to touch the back of the cardto try to get a feel of what has been drawn.

As all this takes place you have a business card palmed inyour right hand. For beginners this a term from card magic butdont let it daunt you you simply have a business card in yourright hand blank side down in your right hand. The video download will make this clearer needless to say your right hand ispalm down and no one is aware there is a business there.

As you say I just want to touch the back of your card youbring your right hand on to the cards in your left hand and deposityour hidden card on top of the cards in your left hand in otherwords on top of the card that was written on. You immediately thenbrush the top card with your fingers. You pause a beat, then takethe top card (pretending it is the spectators card when it is infact an extra blank card) and place it drawing side down on thetable. Alternately you can slowly go into your pocket with the cardemphasising that you do not want to see it.. So in effect you haveswitched their card with another blank one.

The preceding moves are the same ones used in the Psychometryroutine.

As you place the card on the table (or place the (blank)business card into your pocket) you turn over the bunch of businesscards in your left hand. No one will see this as they are lookingat the card going to the table/pocket.
