Preface
So, youve heard the hype about how ordinary peoplejust like youare earning hundreds, thousands, and even millions of dollars in extra income by launching their own online businesses, often from their homes. Now, you want in on the action! Well, if you have an idea for an awesome product to sell, this book will help you get started quickly, and with the lowest initial investment possible. Best of all, no previous business experience is necessary, and you dont need to know anything about computer programming, thanks to the many e-commerce turnkey solutions currently available to online merchants.
Some of what youll need to get started is:
A great business idea (including ideas about what youll be selling online and to whom)
Initial investment capital to create and launch your website and to market your website for basic business supplies and for product inventory
A computer with access to the internet (preferably a high-speed DSL, FIOS, or Broadband connection)
Access to an e-commerce turnkey solution or website design software
A willingness to work hard to get your business started
Its important to understand that Design and Launch Your E-Commerce Website in One Week is not about get-rich-quick schemes. What this book focuses on is how to sell products (as opposed to information or services) online using an e-commerce website (complete with shopping cart module) that youll create, operate, and manage.
The information in this book will help you start selling virtually any product quickly and profitably, and it will help you properly identify your target audience and then efficiently and cost-effectively reach it with appropriate marketing, advertising, and public relations efforts.
E-COMMERCE = BIG BUCKS FOR SAVVY BUSINESS OPERATORS
Revenues generated by online businesses and the online parts of traditional retail businesses during 2006 generated over $96 billion, up from $83 billion in 2004. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Rapid growth in e-retail has been the norm. From 2000 to 2005, retail e-sales increased at an average annual growth rate of 27.3 percent, compared with 4.3 percent for total retail sales.
The U.S. Census Bureau also reported that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the second quarter of 2007, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, was $33.6 billion, an increase of 6.4 percent from the first quarter of 2007.
By 2010, more than 1.8 billion people worldwide are expected to be web surfers, according to the Computer Industry Almanac. One of the biggest misconceptions first-time online sellers have is that if they simply create and publish a basic e-commerce website and then start offering products for sale, thousands or millions of web surfers will come flocking to their site with credit cards in hand, ready to place orders.
Well, this is not the case! To launch a successful online business that incorporates an e-commerce website, the site you create must look professional, be easy to navigate, and offer products your customers want and/or need at competitive prices. This is only the start, however. Youll also need to attract web surfers, aka traffic, to your e-commerce website and provide top-notch customer service. Then, youll need to quickly ship the products you sell to your customers and manage the day-to-day operations of your new business.
The Lingo Youll Need to Know
Throughout this book, Ill explain the important terms youll need to understand to brainstorm, design, create, and manage your website and online business. Heres a quick summary of some key terms that have been used thus far:
E-commerce turnkey solution. A complete set of website design and management tools that allows anyone to create, publish, and manage an ecommerce website for a pre-determined (often recurring) fee. These solutions require absolutely no programming knowledge. A computer with access to the internet is required to use them, because the majority of these tools are online-based. See Chapters 5 and 6 for more information about these powerful tools.
Merchant. Someone who sells products or services. In terms of this book, it refers to someone selling products online using an e-commerce website.
E-commerce website. A website designed to sell products online. This type of website must quickly and accurately convey details about the product(s) being sold, plus have a shopping cart feature that allows customers (web surfers) to safely and securely place their orders using a major credit card or another online payment method. (See Chapter 15 for details about online payment options.)
Shopping cart. The module of an e-commerce website that serves as an interactive order form. It allows customers to input their order, shipping details, and credit card/payment information in a secure manner, and then place their order electronically through a website.
Traffic. Refers to the number of web surfers who visit your site. A visitor is someone who surfs over to your website to explore. Your goal as an online merchant is to transform web surfers into paying customers who place orders for your product electronically. The percentage of people who go from surfers to paying customers is referred to as your conversion rate.
Running a Successful Online Business
Just about anyone with a basic understanding of computers, a bit of creativity, and knowledge of how to surf the web can start what could become a successful online business. The trick is coming up with a profitable product (or products) to sell, developing a quality, professional-looking website, and then efficiently marketing the website to generate traffic.
Depending on what youre selling, your target audience, and how much marketing you do, your online business can be a part-time project that generates a bit of extra income, or it could potentially be grown into a mega-successful, full-time business venture that allows you to generate a very respectable income over time.
