PREFACE
While there are a variety of books to help you get into college, there are very few that help you navigate the college scene once you receive admittance, transfer to a different university, or start attending classes on campus. Even parents have questions to ask about the university experience because things may have changed since their days at college, or maybe they never set foot on a campus and dont know the first thing to ask.
This book came about for this very reason. Bewildered by the number of colleges out there and their differences, we looked for one source to answer a multitude of questions in one place. We found SAT test practice books, college rankings and ratings, and how-to books on writing college essays, but nothing that helped with how to ask and have questions answered when you dont know what you dont know.
Coming up with questions was not hard. We knew nothing and moved on from there to involve university representatives, trade association spokesmen, company and government agency personnel, and students themselves in answering our questions. What resulted was a guidebook for parents of prospective college students, incoming freshmen, college transfer students, and those now studying at universities. The book deals with all aspects of college, and it does answer these important questions.
Coronavirus and College
Now that coronavirus has affected the United States and every college campus, things are different at each school. Institutions have implemented measures to make sure students and school employees stay safe and healthy, and staff on campus do things another way now.
Many colleges have implemented new public-health measures. Here are some things you might expect to see on campus:
Handwashing or hand sanitizer
Doctors have recommended washing your hands often using soap and water lathering your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer also works well, and you will see dispensers at points throughout campus to help you. If soap and water are not readily available, hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol can be used, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
Mask or face coverings
Many universities are handing out masks for free to all students. When walking to class or in a classroom, wear your face covering. The same holds if you are meeting with a professor or in a common area. When outside, wear a mask and stay six feet from others. Practice social distancing to the maximum extent possible.
Physical distancing
Classrooms, offices, and campus spaces are now set up to have six feet of distance between individuals. Look for markings on floors to see proper spacing. Additionally, many buildings will have one-way corridors clearly marked to enhance social distancing. Be sure to follow directional signs.
Not touching your face
Germs spread from hands to your eyes, nose, and mouth when you touch your face. Expect to see signs and reminders around campus of this important fact.
Dont go out when sick
When feeling ill or after exposure to someone with a positive test for Covid-19, stay in your location and keep track of your symptoms. Your health-care facility or the Deans Office can advise you on making appointments and how to handle the situation.
