Within half a decade since the last edition, Ophthalmology has already witnessed substantial changes in disease understanding, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatments. Ocular imaging has advanced in leaps and bounds, and therapeutic modalities are constantly changing and being evaluated, rendering certain best practices obsolete. Long-term follow up in landmark studies and clinical trials have allowed us to counsel patients better on the natural history of their condition. The third edition of this book reflects this changing landscape, and specifically includes new topics such as novel investigations (spectral domain OCT, OCT angiography, etc.), elaboration of important surgeries, summary of landmark trials and studies, and progression in the field of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) as the major treatment modality of retinal diseases. However, the style and format remain consistent throughout the three editions, by providing only essential, key facts and topics that are important from an examination perspective, especially for exams with a strong oral or viva component.
We hope the book continues to serve as a companion to standard texts, as a revision tool closer to the exams, and as a last minute refresher! Many residents, registrars and ophthalmology trainees around the world have endorsed this book. We hope this new version continues to be relevant and useful!
