The eagerly anticipated inspirational memoir from Michelle Obamas brother, celebrating the extraordinary family members and mentors who have shaped his life
When he stepped into historys spotlight at the National Democratic Convention, Craig Robinson recalls that nothing could have been more gratifying than introducing his sister, Michelle Obama, to millions of Americans. Within minutes, he won the hearts of the nation by sharing highlights of growing up in the modest Robinson household, where the two were raised by devoted parents who taught them the values of education, hard work, and the importance of reaching far beyond what even seemed possible.
Those lessons of character were fundamentals in shaping Craig Robinsons own remarkable journey: from his days playing street basketball on Chicagos Southside, while excelling academically, to admission at Princeton University, where he was later named Ivy League Player of the Year, twice. After playing professionally in Europe, Robinson made an about-face, entering the competitive field of finance. With his MBA from the University of Chicago, his meteoric rise landed him a partnership in a promising new venture. But another dream beckoned and Craig made the unusual decision to forego the trappings of money and status in the business world in order to become a basketball coach. He soon helped transform three struggling teams - as an assistant coach at Northwestern, then as head coach at Brown and now at Oregon State University. In his first season at OSU, he navigated what was declared to be one of the nations best single season turnarounds.
In A Game of Character, Robinson takes readers behind the scenes to meet his most important influences in his understanding of the winning traits that are part of his playbook for success. Central to his story are his parents, Marian and Fraser, two indefatigable individuals who showed their children how to believe in themselves and live their lives with conviction through love, discipline and respect. With insights into this exemplary family, we relive memories of how Marian sacrificed a career to be a full-time mom, how Fraser got up and went to work every day while confronting the challenges of multiple sclerosis, how Craig and Michelle strengthened their bond as they journeyed out of the Southside to Princeton University and eventually, the national stage.
Heartwarming, inspiring, and even transformational, A Game of Character comes just at the right time in an era of change, reminding readers of our opportunity to work together and embrace the character of our nation, to make a difference in the lives of others and to pave the way for the next generation.

TO MY FAMILYMY LIFE,

FOREWORD
BY MARIAN ROBINSON

Id like to begin by borrowing an idea that my son raised when he was asked to provide an introduction for his sister, my daughter, Michelle Robinson Obama, now our nations First Lady, before she spoke on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. He lovingly noted then, as a family member it is an honor to make such an introduction. So it gives me similar pleasure not just to introduce my son, Craig Robinsonthe author of A Game of Characterbut more important, to introduce my son to you.
As I think youll discover the moment you dive into the stories ahead, Craig loves the game of basketball with a passion that is absolutely contagious. He truly believes that everyone and anyone can benefit from learning the lessons of character that the game can teach. And even if you know little or nothing about basketball, and have never contemplated the possibility of knowing more about it, be prepared for that to change! Oh yes, ever since he was a little boy, Craig has had an unusual ability to put his convictions to usealong with his enthusiasm and excellent skills of strategyand to successfully persuade others to consider looking at something in a new and different way.
This may explain why my daughter enlisted Craigs help in persuading me to consider moving to the White House not long after Barack was elected president. There were many good and valid reasons that Michelle raised with me, not the least of which was the opportunity to continue spending time with my granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, and to assist in giving them a sense of normalcy that is a priority for both of their parents, and has been from the time Barack began his political career. My feeling, however, was that I could visit periodically without actually moving in and still be there for the girls.
True, Craig agreed when he heard my reasons for not wanting to move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But then he argued, Why not think about it as an opportunity to expand your horizons, to try something new? You might want to just give it a try. He had a point. And what made his argument so convincing was that, as usual, he was using a line of reasoning he had learned from me! Of course, not to overplay his hand, Craig then added, But you should do whatever you think is right.
As a compromise, I opted to move to the White House after all, at least temporarilywhile still reserving lots of time to travel and to maintain a certain amount of autonomy. So far, so good!
When I first heard that Craig was going to be writing this book, I couldnt have been more delighted. For one thing, he has a very distinctive point of view about the connection between basketball and character that comes from a lifelong, ongoing study of each of those areas of interest. Also, as he explained to me at the time, for many years the role of family historianthe keeper of the family lore, as Craig puts ithad belonged to his father, my late husband, Fraser Robinson. Without Fraser here to keep those stories alive, they were in danger of becoming lost and Craig was determined not to let them go, but to instead take up his fathers mantle of story-teller, motivator, and Philosopher-in-Chief.
Well, I can assure you, that is one tall order! But Craig has risen to the challenge with A Game of Character, a book that not only pays tribute to his parents (and to all parents, teachers, mentors, and coaches, for that matter), but also honors a beautiful brother-sister relationship and all sibling, family, and community relationships. In the process, Craig also brings to life long-forgotten memories for me that I suspect may spur your own family recollections. Im confident that you will find the stories he uses to illustrate lessons learned, as I did, to be as moving, funny, honest, and instructive as they are enlightening.
As a parent, Im certainly not alone in feeling that there are few experiences more rewarding than watching your children go out into the world and go further than you could have ever dreamed of going yourself. Fraser and I used to talk about that all the time. Its something I have told Craig and Michelle on numerous occasions, whenever theyve voiced concerns about how challenging it was for their dad to get up and go to work every day with the painful disability of multiple sclerosis. What Ive tried to tell them is that their father was overflowing with so much joy and pride just from being their dad that he felt like the luckiest person to walk the earth.
There are simply no words to say how proud Fraser would have been today of his daughter, Michelle, and his son-in-law, Barack, whom he had the pleasure of getting to know and of welcoming into our family early on in the young couples courtship. What a proud grandfather he would have been of Malia and Sasha Obama, as well as of his grandchildren Avery and Leslie Robinson, and of their baby brother, our newest family arrival, Austin Lucas Robinson, born January 4, 2010, to my daughter-in-law, Kelly, and to Craig.
More than anything, Fraser would have been so proud of the parents that our kids and their spouses have become. And I know he would have absolutely loved this book and how it reflects so much of the teaching he incorporated into his everyday interactions with others. He would have especially loved the fact that Craig reminds us throughout his book of the theme of unselfish basketballand the opportunities we have to do more for one another and to win together as families, as communities, and as a nation.
Well, there is one other thing that Im sure Fraser would have wanted me to add in this foreword, and that is to tell you just what an exceptional coach Craig Malcolm Robinson has become. I say that not as a mom or even as someone who has known him since he was born about forty-eight years ago. That comment comes from attending practices and games over the last fifteen years or so, and from watching Craig work with his players, using every teaching tool and resource at his disposal, coaching them to reach beyond their own limitations and to develop their own potential not only as athletes but as great human beingsinspiring them to go further than they may have even dreamed. And isnt that what character is all about?
PREGAME:
TESTS OF CHARACTER

The idea to write this bookas a way of paying tribute to a handful of very important individuals who have shaped my understanding of basketball and of life, and who have contributed to my ongoing search for what it truly means to have characterhas been percolating in the back of my mind for years.
But it wasnt until the waning minutes before my appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Monday night, August 25, 2008, that I made the conscious decision to put pen to paper. Of course, writing a book was the last thing that I needed to be thinking about at that particular time for me and my family, not to mention in those very moments while standing backstagewhere I was attempting to go through the equivalent of my pregame ritual that allows me, as a coach, to remove myself from the hubbub and become the calm within the storm for my players. But this night, for lack of a better description, was a whole other ball game!
