17. Stages & Steps for Upstyling Your Piece
This printable checklist can be used for each painting project. The step-by-step process is outlined in stages that allow for drying periods needed after painting and glazing. Each stage lists what could be accomplished on a given day, but more time can be taken if needed. For example, you may want to prepare your piece (step 1) on one day, take a break, and then prime your piece (step 2) on another day. Or you can do them on the same day, whatever works best for you. This eBook is dedicated to my dear wife and wonderful teammate in life, Julie. I love how you make the best of things, like those sturdy, yet ugly composite bookshelves of mine you painted red when we got married. Like you, they have brightened up the places we have lived. You saw what could be, and always do, in people and in whatever we have. Your contentment fosters joy that the priciest things cant offer. Thank you.
This is also dedicated to our four children, the apples of my eye. I love your spirited, passionate, and creative hearts. Tonight, I told the oldest among you that I am sorry Ive recently missed the beginning of his fall baseball practices. In reply, he said, thats okay Dad, I dont want you to come so you can finish your book and others can learn to paint furniture. He meant it, and my eyes shared a moment of awe with Julie over his kind and giving words. David, I cant wait to watch you play ball!
And to our many customers, thank you for helping make our business a success. Since opening our doors a year ago, youve kept us busy non-stop with your custom orders and trusted us with valued pieces that help make your house a home. Thanks for believing in our creativity and for helping make our small business a success. Your pieces have helped breathe life into this book!
Finally, to the Master Creator, whos wild and rugged places in this world fill me with awe, thank you for being so artistic and lavishing our world with so much beauty . Through it You speak to me, and draw me nearer to You.
Blazing Heat and Ideas Brewing
This eBook was born out of the hot summer days of 2012. In October 2011, we opened our business in a location with a great space for painting, but with no air conditioning. Living near Houston, TX, winter is a great time to paint and enjoy fresh air with the garage door at my shop wide open. But summer is not! With oppressive heat upon us, June found my start time shifted to well above sunrise. Every day, I packed in as much painting before early afternoon temperatures hit 90.
The blazing afternoon forced me indoors, and opened up a great opportunity. Over countless cups of coffee, and wonderful air conditioning at Starbucks, I began writing. I love the artistry of words, and have experience sharing stories. But a practical step-by-step guide on painting furniture, now that was a leap! Fortunately and miraculously, something from my college technical writing class of 25 years ago stuck with me, and the detailed descriptions starting coming together.
Between afternoons of writing, I was back in the studio painting. A habit formed in my mind of asking myself, how do I best put this step to words? or what is it about glazing that makes it work so well on furniture? or how do I explain these products to someone, who, like myself before I started painting furniture, has no idea what they are dealing with?
Something really exciting started coming together. A quiet, passionate determination arose to think through the best ways possible, from start to finish, how I could help someoneinexperienced as I once waslearn how to bring a great and very artistic look to old, ugly furniture. I now paint furniture every day, and while the hot summer weather stinks, its still a pleasure to see what glaze can do to a painted piece of old furniture.
Its been just as much fun to find these words to pass on to you, the reader. As you learn how to upstyle your furniture, my encouragement to you is this: take your time. Learn the process. Enjoy the discovery. Too much of life is rushed, but time well spent on a new skill learned can bring the satisfaction and pride of something done well and worked hard for. With your paint brush, and a T-shirt rag in hand, may you experience the same!
