Introduction If you were to randomly stop Anyone on Any Street in Anytown - photo 3
Introduction
If you were to randomly stop Anyone on Any Street in Anytown, USA, and ask the following three questions, Im certain that the answer to at least one of the questions would be yes:
1. Do you have a grandparent, parent, or sibling who has diabetes?
2. Do you have a friend or coworker who has diabetes?
3. Does your husband, wife, or anyone in your extended family (cousins, aunts, uncles) have diabetes?
Almost everyone knows someone with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, and the numbers are rising on a daily basis. Every nineteen seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
Although we most often associate an epidemic with a fast-spreading disease, such as the flu, the term epidemic has been linked to type 2 diabetes since early this century. In December 2006, the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) published data indicating the enormity of the diabetes epidemic. Since the IDFs alarming report, there has been tremendous worldwide attention regarding the implications of this uncontrolled global epidemic.
UNDERSTANDING MET B, PREDIABETES, AND TYPE 1 AND 2 DIABETES
METABOLISM B
Also known as metabolic syndrome, Met B appears to be rooted in a genetic predisposition to insulin imbalance and insulin resistance. This hormonal imbalance appears to be triggered by a combination of physical, emotional, or environmental stressors and progressively leads to escalating weight, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Without proper diet and exercise, Met B can lead to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

PREDIABETES
Prediabetes is a metabolic condition that occurs when fasting blood glucose is elevated but not to the degree of type 2 diabetes levels. Diagnosis of prediabetes is made when lab-drawn fasting blood glucose is 100125 mg/dL or hemoglobin A1C is 5.76.4. Although prediabetes is considered to be reversible, without intervention (e.g., positive changes in diet, exercise, and maintenance of a healthy weight), it is likely to lead to irreversible type 2 diabetes in ten years or less.

DIABETES
Type 1: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder with possible environmental triggers, such as a virus or environmental toxins. It accounts for between 5 and 10 percent of cases of diagnosed diabetes. Once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adultsalthough anyone can develop type 1 diabetes. It is a chronic disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. An outside source of insulin is required for life. There is currently no cure of type 1 diabetes.
Type 2: Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is the result of genetic factors and lifestyle stressors (obesity, overweight, age, poor diet, lack of exercise, emotional stress). It is by far the most prevalent type of diabetes, with almost 95 percent of diagnosed cases of diabetes being this type. It is diagnosed when lab-drawn fasting blood glucose exceeds 125mg/dL or hemoglobin A1C exceeds 6.4. Although it occurs mainly in adults, children also can be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. A progressive disease that is the result of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency, type 2 diabetes can be treated with any of the following: diet/exercise, diet/exercise/oral medications, or diet/exercise/insulin.
In the United States today, one in ten adults has diabetes. A whopping 104.8 million Americans have either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), seven million Americans are unaware that they have diabetes. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that by the year 2050, as many as one in three adults in the United States could have diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is not only a concern of adults; obesity and overweight are also taking their toll on children. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), approximately 4.5 percent of children were overweight between 1963 and 1970. Today, approximately 17 percent of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 are obese. Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled, and one in three children is now considered overweight or obese.
Diabetes is also a worldwide problem. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, by 2025, 300 million of the worlds population will be affected by diabetes.
WHY DIABETES? WHY NOW?
What is going on? Why has the incidence of diabetes risen so dramaticallyand why is the diagnosis rate expected to continue to rise?
Six factors are combining to accelerate the diabetes epidemic in the United States and around the world:
1. Baby boomers (people born between 1945 and 1964) make up a large percentage of the American population. The incidence of type 2 diabetes increases with age, and Americans are becoming an older population.
2. Were living longer. Advances in diabetes management, including the development of various medications, are enabling people with a diagnosis of diabetes to live longer.
3. Diabetes is being diagnosed at younger ages. Earlier diagnosis is expanding the number of people under the umbrella of prediabetes and type 2.
4. Minority populations that currently have a higher rate of diabetes are increasing.
5. We are consuming diets of increased portion sizes of carbohydrate-dense foods. Restaurant portions of pasta, rice, fries, as well as supersized soft drinks, bagels, muffins, pretzels, burger buns, and ice creams are sometimes three to four times larger than they were twenty years ago.
6. People are less physically active and are becoming more sedentary. In place of walking, we rely on cars to take us everywhere. Instead of physically playing, children are spending more time passively watching television, using computers, playing video games, texting, talking on the phone, and listening to their MP3s. Appliances have taken the activity component out of our home lives, while longer workdays have taken away from exercise time. The majority of jobs are no longer physical in nature; they involve largely sedentary office work, customer service, computers, or desk jobs.
A combination of these factors has lead to the burgeoning epidemic that is exponentially gaining strength.
THE COSTS OF DIABETES
Having type 2 diabetes is one thing. Having type 2 diabetes under control is another. A person whose diabetes is under good control can prevent or greatly forestall diabetic health complications. On the other hand, a person with diabetes that is out of control over a long period of time will systematically chip away irreversibly at his long term health. These complications can include:
HEART DISEASE AND STROKE
Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about two to four times higher than adults without diabetes.
